An Open Letter to Ellie Goulding

    Dear Ms. Goulding —

We at Having Kids Inc. strongly support your decision to delay having kids and your new podcast about your decision not to rush into having children. The many career women of the world have evidenced that having children isn’t the “end all, be alll” in life. We encourage you to follow through on your inspiration to take on a new platform to share your story. Your decision to delay starting a family is very much in alignment with the Having Kids Fair Start model detailed below.

The Fair Start model is simple:
1.) Communities help parents to plan their families and wait for readiness before having kids.
2.) We all ensure prioritized resource distribution to give all kids a fair start in life.
3.) We all promote smaller and more regenerative families that make all of this possible.

We believe it is the best interpretation of the fundamental right to have children. The Fair Start Model is 10 to 20 times more effective at protecting children and our environment, and at building human rights and democracy, than other policies that address these issues. For many reasons, it is an overriding human right that can be furthered by all means effective. We would appreciate greatly your helping us promote
    the Fair Start model.

  • Survey Shows Broad Support for Male Pill and Policies to Encourage Its Use

Survey Shows Broad Support for Male Pill and Policies to Encourage Its Use

In 2019, Having Kids launched a campaign for policies that would encourage funding for the approval, marketing, and subsidization of the male birth control pill. From a powerful way to deal with Covid-19 and future pandemics to a means of addressing fundamental gender inequity, the male pill could be the magic pill for many of the crises we face today.

Now, Having Kids is releasing a survey showing just how much people want the male pill and policies that would promote its use.

    The results are below.

Bar chart showing responses to How supportive are you of a birth control pill for men? Most answered Very supportive (54.99%), followed by Supportive (29.20%), with fewer selecting Neutral, Unsupportive, or Very unsupportive.
A bar chart shows survey responses about support for the CDC promoting a male birth control pill to male teenagers. Most chose Very Supportive (180), followed by Supportive (140) and fewer chose Unsupportive or Very Unsupportive.
A bar chart shows survey responses on support for CDC promoting a male birth control pill to combat climate change. Most chose Very supportive, followed by Supportive, Neutral, Unsupportive, and Very unsupportive.
A word cloud displaying responses to What benefits do you associate with a birth control pill for men? Prominent words include: women, unwanted pregnancies, population, responsibility, control, less, health, benefits, and sperm.
A word cloud showing responses to concerns about a birth control pill for men. Prominent words include side effects, concerned, none, birth control pill, men, effect, and weight gain.
Bar chart showing survey responses to organizational support for encouraging cooperation between prospective parents and equitable families. Most respondents are Supportive (166) or Very supportive (140) out of 411 total responses.

TAKE ACTION: Urge the federal government to prioritize funding for the approval, marketing, and subsidization of the male pill.

  • The CDC Responds and We Reply: Address Overcrowding as a Fundamental Factor in Pandemics

The CDC Responds and We Reply: Address Overcrowding as a Fundamental Factor in Pandemics

On Earth Day this year, Having Kids wrote to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention asking it to consider supporting new family planning policies that would address overcrowding and other factors that impact the spread and impact of Covid-19 and that threaten to help create new pandemics.

On May 27, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the CDC kindly responded, noting that 1) United States birth rates are at an all-time low, and 2) the CDC is doing much to protect families and children from Covid-19.

We appreciate the response and applaud these efforts, but we have responded with the following ask:

Given that the CDC in its letter recognizes the connection between low birth rates, overcrowding, and pandemics, would it support our call for new legislation promoting smaller families? Forthcoming legislation on Covid-19 could be linked to forthcoming legislation on childcare and subsidized “baby bonds” in a way that starts to change the underlying model that drives family planning outcomes and transitions the country to smaller families who can invest more in each child.

We are also asking the CDC (and World Health Organization) to include in the policy change the other three inevitable factors present in all family planning regimes: 1) the impact on prenatal, birth, and early development conditions on qualitative outcomes like health, education, and the development of empathy, 2) the impact of equity and prospects for equality of opportunities in life, and 3) the impact on the environment and prospects for the restoration of nature as a buffer against future pandemics. The CDC and WHO can support policy transitions to better family planning and can codify the human rights-based child-centered model in a variety of ways.

    The facts are clear:

    • Population growth and the large families that cause it have worsened the impact of Covid-19.
    • The impact of Covid-19 depends on the civic qualities of the populace, including empathy and the willingness to engage in measures that protect others. These qualities, and related factors like the effective dissemination and internalization of simple public health information, depend in part on family planning regimes.
    • Equity and the massive disparity in health outcomes during Covid-19 largely depend on family planning and birth conditions.
    • The underlying driver of future pandemics is the degradation of nature. We need policies that restore it.
In other words, the historic spike in population growth over the past century has been a public health problem.

TAKE ACTION: Urge leadership to move from parent-focused to a human rights-based child-focused family planning model.

  • Biden vs. Trump? Here’s a Better Way Forward

Biden vs. Trump? Here’s a Better Way Forward

Eleanor Roosevelt once said: “Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.”

So why are we focused on two men fighting for a presidency as if the idea of controlling our future were like some kind of football game?

We tend to see it this way because mistakes were made in the way we designed our constitutions and political system, and because of cognitive dissonances we humans are prone to, like confusing symbols with the real things those symbols refer to. Instead of seeing “We the people” as an inherently dynamic and intergenerational concept and instead of empowering future generations, past leadership vested the power in themselves. And as the United States population ballooned from 3 million to well over 300 million, people remained focused on distracting icons like the presidency, or one person who is supposed to “represent” all of us, rather than focusing on empowering one another. Representative democracy replaced real democracy where each person has real control over outcomes.

    • For example, we focus on Biden or Trump as a symbol for what we want in terms of climate policy, when in reality, the underlying population of the country – the thing driving the climate crisis and the ultimate source of political authority – continues to grow and become less equal, so that the average person has less and less of an impact on national policy. We are decoyed by these two men, who in the end will simply enforce through violence their own views on a populace they do not and cannot represent, while the fundamental state of democracy and freedom degrades. This is iconarchy, not democracy.

In fact, our leaders, working with business interests, intentionally accelerated the process of centralizing their power by encouraging population growth and failing to require systems that would equitably develop each person to help co-lead true democracies, ensuring chaos, and with it our reliance upon strong leaders instead of one another. Today, many want to exacerbate this problem in the name of creating economic growth. They exploit an archaic legal system that does not clearly protect a right to nature, but defends completely irresponsible procreation because of the population growth it creates. This is emblematic of our history of trading self-determination and freedom for chaos, greed and consumption, and the exploitation of future generations.

To people who care about democracy, or a system that allows all people to control the rules under which they live, this is offensive. We have a right to an effective role – not diluted by hundreds of millions of people – in the political systems that impact our lives. Is it time to tear down the icons and to stop the constant political swing from left to right? Can we disempower the symbolic, meaning the leadership at the top of both the public and private sectors, and then empower the real — the people themselves — from the bottom up?

The best way to do that, and the most effective way to directly address the crises we now face, irrespective of our “representatives,” is to correct these mistakes and build our systems around the idea of cooperative self-determination. Instead of thinking of democracies as constituted in the past, we must instead think about having kids as a way to constitute the democracies we want and deserve in the future. We can do so by ensuring every child’s right to a fair start in life, which is the first and overriding human right, and using that right to decentralize and limit human power. If we truly believe in government for and by the people, that is the only way to achieve it.

At Having Kids, we are trying to move systems in that direction by decentralizing the power at the top of what Nobel Laureate Steven Chu called a population pyramid and investing that power in future generations.

Ready to make real change? Here are several actions you can take to join the fight to give the people control of their own futures.

  • Fair Start Family Planning: The Frontier of Social Justice?

Fair Start Family Planning: The Frontier of Social Justice?

The idea that every kid deserves a fair start in life — and that ensuring this fair start is the most effective way to protect our environment, animals, and democracy — is gaining traction. From Salon to Newsweek, media are starting to realize how treating family planning as a private matter has created the social and ecological crises that threaten our future. That realization is supported by a raft of peer-reviewed publications, which also light a pathway for policies that can get us and our kids out of the nightmare we are creating for them:

    ·         We know kids all need a fair start in life to succeed, and Fair Start judicial orders are a simple way to legislate and constitutionalize family planning reform.

    ·         Those orders can be part of comprehensive state and federal legislation recognizing the incomparable impact of better family planning. It’s the most effective way to help kids, animals, and the environment — in many cases, 10 to 20 times more effectively than downstream approaches.

    ·         What’s a practical way to ensure fair starts? Recent studies suggest that redistributing resources from the wealthy to incentivize parents to work together to level the playing field at birth, and to improve initial conditions for all kids, will work.

    ·         Reforming our policies to give every kid a fair start in life is the only way to build democracy from the ground up and comprise the future of people truly capable of self-rule.

  • Kate Middleton: Can We Improve Our Kids’ Future?

Kate Middleton: Can We Improve Our Kids’ Future?

Having Kids has quite a history urging the royal family to take the lead on helping the world transition from a parent-focused family planning model to a child-focused model. It started with our famous open letter to Kate Middleton and Prince William. It later included our celebrating Meghan Markle’s and Prince Harry’s public announcement that they were choosing a smaller family for environmental reasons.

A slew of recent articles in Marie Claire, Express UK, and the International Business Times now question whether we are giving good advice. The truth is, Having Kids wants the best future for all children. And the facts don’t lie: The most effective way to fight the biggest crises facing our world — including the climate crisis, child poverty, and growing inequity — is through family planning that promotes smaller and more equitable families. By having smaller families, we can invest more time, love, energy, and resources in every child. Better family planning will also ensure a smaller and more resilient population more capable of thriving in the degraded ecology of the future.

If we truly love children, including Prince Louis of Cambridge, we will actually do that which protects their collective future. And the only way to do that, given the self-exacerbating collective action problem at the heart of our family planning system, is to start to work together to plan the best families we can.

Take action: Urge the editors of Marie Claire, Express UK, and the International Business Times, via these links or the contact information available on their websites, to tell the whole story of why Having Kids spoke out to the royals and why we will keep doing so.

  • World Population Day: Target the People Threatening Our Future

World Population Day: Target the People Threatening Our Future

A universal policy promoting smaller and more equitable families is the most effective way to protect our future – ten to twenty times more effective than other policy reforms.

The Secretary General of the United Nations must take the lead here, and make informal statements that will help change the way we all plan families. He can choose not to put population growth and the economic bubble it creates above human rights and the right to a Fair Start in life, which is the first and most important human right. If he does not change course, he is choosing to exploit and endanger future children, rather than support a system in which we collectively invest more in each child by changing and improving the conditions in which they are born. He gave his own two kids a privileged start in life relative to the poor children of the world, but it does not have to be that way.

As Secretary General he is obligated to speak the truth of human rights to the powers of the world, his silence on this issue threatens his legitimacy, and it will lead to the people rising over him to ensure the better future we all deserve.

TAKE ACTION: Engage the Secretary General directly to do what human rights require, and to support a Fair Start in life for all kids: 1) Email Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesman for the Secretary-General, at dujarric@un.org, 2) contact the United Nations at 212-963-4475, or 3) engage the Secretary General in person to demand action.

  • Covid-19 and Family Planning: Get the Facts

Covid-19 and Family Planning: Get the Facts

As the pandemic kills millions, governments and public health officials rarely want to talk about family planning and the factors that fundamentally drive pandemics. Why? Because these officials are intentionally relying on unsustainable family planning models designed to promote economic growth, but which also exacerbate the threat and impact of pandemics.

The decision to stick with these old models cost lives, and will cost more.

    Here are the facts.

    • Civic qualities that are largely contingent on the conditions of our birth and early development, like our overall health and risk of comorbidities, as well as empathy deficits which are reflected in the refusal of many to engage in easy and life-saving public health measures like practicing social distancing and wearing masks, substantially contribute to the impact of pandemics like Covid-19.
    • The economic disparities we inherit at birth lead to massive disparities in how pandemics impact different communities, and hence determine the average impact of things like Covid-19.
    • Our growing population is degrading our natural ecologies, which sets the stage for future and worse pandemics.

These factors are currently moving in a direction that exacerbate the threat and impact of things like Covid-19. We are moving in the wrong direction. Right now the United Nations takes the position that these factors are not our collective concern.

That makes no sense. And because of that position, countless pregnant women are now at severe risk from Covid-19. Governments and public health officials dropped the ball by not taking family planning more seriously in the past, and now we are paying the price. If we want to address the fundamental drivers of social and ecological crises like Covid-19 we will change the way we plan families, and begin to constitute legitimate and democratic communities, not bloated economies incapable of dealing with threats to public health.

TAKE ACTION: Urge world leadership to do what they should have done long ago, and adopt universal, sustainable and equitable family planning policies.

  • The Fourth of July: Can We Really Become Free?

Freedom is a complex concept that has little to do with beer and fireworks, and more to do with a form of political evolution few people understand. People like Elon Musk invoking the concept to harm others when he reopened factories despite Covid-19 shutdown orders, and Donald Trump creating a caveman’s rendering of the holiday complete with a display of force, don’t help. That’s how children think about freedom, and it’s reminiscent of the movie Team America.

On the other side of the political spectrum we have Elizabeth Warren, and her plans to obligate us to pay for other parents’ child care with no assurances that those parents are ready to be good parents, or will have ecologically sustainable small families. Does being part of this country really mean we have to sign up for that obligation, irrespective of what it will do to our future? Is the government going to act as a sort of meta-parent going forward, despite the fact that it’s usually horrible at doing so?

There is a better way to think about freedom, and to take the action necessary to actually achieve it. First, we can realize that true change comes by thinking ahead, focusing on the way we plan families. Second, we can make sure future children have the freedom to equal opportunies in life by accounting for the conditions in which they are born, and designing small family policies that also urge prospective parents to redistribute resources in very particular ways. Third, we can make sure future children will have freedom from others, and from social threats like the climate crisis and Covid-19, that is only possible in smaller democracies where each voice is heard and matters, and communities are surrounded by a restored, safe and natural environment.

We pursue this fredom it by decentralizing corporate and governmental concentrations of power and distributing them equitably into future generations. And because we are talking about literally building legitimate democractic communities through the people who will actually comprise them, we may do so by all means effective.

Let’s take action to truly become free people, and make this holiday mean something.
