  • It’s Time to Tell the Truth: Have Nonprofits Misled Supporters by Hiding Unsustainable Growth Policies?

It’s Time to Tell the Truth: Have Nonprofits Misled Supporters by Hiding Unsustainable Growth Policies?

As the climate crisis deepens, with massive heatwaves killing untold number of people, and pregnant women and infants being harmed by even the current rise in world temperature, many are wondering how the world came to such a state.

Many nonprofits have been touting the success of energy efficiency or other campaigns designed to limit emissions.

The success of these efforts has been largely undone by overconsumption. This happens as demand for things like emissions-producing animal products, and even whole ecosystems, rises with growth. But it also happens at a much larger scale as that growth exacerbates the climate crisis on dozens of other levels, something that is enabled by many organizations’ anthropocentric and extractive environmental policies, and policies that failed to protect nature / the nonhuman world.

The crisis was fundamentally driven by the family policies – both tacit and explicit – that many nonprofits have simply accepted despite the harm they cause to women and children. These policies often quietly placed more children, animals, and ecosystems in harm’s way than the organizations’ campaigns were saving, and in a way that degraded human rights and democracy and empowered a few. I have spoken with leadership at nonprofits who admitted to me that their position on population growth, and their ignoring the massive child inequity that comes with such growth, was undoing their claimed success in fundraising materials, but these leaders were afraid to speak out for of fear of losing funding by being controversial.

Line graph comparing average family wealth by race/ethnicity from 1963–2016. White families’ wealth rises steeply, far surpassing Black and Hispanic families, showing large racial wealth gaps widening over time.

These policies made large funders and the groups that answer to them money by bypassing requirements to ensure birth and development conditions for all children consistent with the Children’s Rights Convention and instead creating unsustainable, population-driven economic growth that treated children as cheap future labor, voracious consumers, and compliant taxpayers.

Government officials have been equally complicit in this process, creating policies like pronatal tax incentives that help large concentrations of wealth and power undermine democracy while appearing to further progressive goals. These policies enriched white families at costs to black families, as officials ignored alternatives that would have done the opposite and instead chose policies that quietly eroded democracy and the extent to which they could actually represent their own constituencies.

Mainstream media, including journalists like Ezra Klein, have ignored journalistic integrity and pushed population growth – in the face of the climate crisis – in a way that benefitted their advertisers and imposed costs on future generations. Google search terms like “baby bust,” and contrast how media covers that issue (while stealth advertising) with how much they have covered the best way to mitigate the climate crisis in the long run.

That level of unethical reporting has hurt people.

A comparison chart of Current Family Planning vs. Fair Start Family Planning. The left side lists negatives of current planning; the right side highlights positive outcomes of fair start planning for welfare, equality, and environmental protection.

The harm from this dynamic, of claims of environmental success performed with one hand being quietly undone with the other hand through anthropocentric growth policies, cannot be overstated as the body count from climate-induced heat waves mount. This dynamic has also hidden the fundamental of baseline for compensation owed to the Global South and future generations, owed because of the failure of the Global North to prevent the climate crisis that it largely caused.

Not only were many nonprofits embracing outdated family policies that let their wealthy funders pass massive privileges to their children while other children were being born and raised in horrific conditions, but now those vulnerable children will disproportionately suffer the impacts – long into the future – of the climate crisis.

Infographic explaining Fair Start impacts: Smaller families are 20x more effective at reducing climate impact. One million species face extinction. By 2100, population may double. Early childhood programs offer 13% ROI; family planning yields 600% ROI.
    Be effective.

Every crisis the public interest community faces today derives from the failure of our predecessors to bend the arc of exploitative growth towards just power relations.

Why would we continue to make that mistake?

The list of costs stemming from that error is staggering: Growing levels of birth-based inequity, rising numbers of unhoused persons, exacerbation of the conditions that drive pandemics, multiplying the climate crisis on multiple levels, degrading systems of participatory democracy, heightened risk of terrorism, the knock on impacts of the relationship between population policies, the creation of communities and humans’ inclination to imitate rather than innovate beneficial behavior, and the inability to effectuate human rights amid the chaos of billions of people (including the commercial cacophony that drowns out valuable truth), most of whom are not sufficiently prepared and empathetic to grasp and apply the system’s basic concepts.

This is not pure theory. I’ve worked in and with nonprofits in which leadership chose climate and population policies that hid the possibility of things like climate reparations, while also benefitting them personally at cost to the organizations’ stated missions. I have talked with prominent advocates of biodiversity who knew their Anthropocentric family policies were quietly causing extinction that undid their public claims, but who were terrified to change course. I have personally met with funders who for years held themselves out to the public as philanthropists protecting animals, in part by investing in vegan products, though they knew the population growth policies they tacitly or expressly supported and profited from were doing much more to harm animals than their investments were doing to help them. I’ve spoken with public officials who understood that growth policies were akin to a Ponzi pyramid scheme (per one Nobel Laureate) that degraded their own representative capacities while exacerbating inequity and the climate crisis, but who chose to do nothing about it.

Two panels compare family planning types. Left: diverse family illustration with bright colors, labeled Fair Start family planning with positive points. Right: grayscale crowd in a city, labeled Economic growth-based family planning with negative points.
Investing more in children, right from the start, in the beginning of justice.

It’s time to break this dynamic of fundamental injustice, and to constitute ourselves – through just family planning – as free and equal people.

    TAKE ACTION NOW:

    • If you support a nonprofit that claims to protect children, the environment, animals, or human rights and democracy, urge them to disclose their current family policies. Are they opting for policies that could bring more children into horrific conditions than the number of children the group is actually serving? Are they opting for policies that could place more animals in harm’s way than the group is saving? Are the groups accounting for how growth is driving a climate crisis that is undoing local environmental efforts, or degrading democracy in relationships between people irrespective of formal changes in political systems? Urge them to instead adopt more ethical models like Fair Start or comparable options.

  • Don’t Get Scammed and Act: Children Will Be Abused to Death Until We Change the Way We Plan Families

Don’t Get Scammed and Act: Children Will Be Abused to Death Until We Change the Way We Plan Families

Florida continues to see tens of thousands of children abused each year, with many of them dying in the process. And the state care system, despite changes, continues to fail them.

Why? Our current family planning systems prioritize population growth to expand our economies, rather than parental readiness through things like delay incentives. That’s wrong, and children will continue to be abused, with toddlers tortured over the span of weeks and in some cases to death, until we change course.

TAKE ACTION: Sen. Lauren Book has spoken out against child abuse. Contact her here and urge her to introduce Fair Start legislation in the state, including Fair Start protective orders and other aspects, like shifting tax credits to ensure parental readiness.

  • An Open Letter Challenge to the Buffet and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundations for Earth Overshoot Day

An Open Letter Challenge to the Buffet and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundations for Earth Overshoot Day

Fair Start Movement’s mission is to replace parent-centric subjective family planning systems with a child-centric model that ensures children are born and raised in conditions consistent – minimally – with the Children’s Rights Convention, a move enabled via effective family planning incentives/entitlements. We partner with organizations around the world, like the wonderful Rejoice Africa Foundation (formerly Kibengo Youth Care Activists), on Fair Start and other initiatives.

Thank you for being a leader in the efforts to assure family planning needs are being met worldwide. Given recent discussions of your foundations possibly funding a world children’s savings bank, if these reports are true, we urge one simple guideline for such a plan. That guideline would correct the baseline error, or the act of trying to assess costs and benefits without orienting from a position of consensual governance, described further below. We urge that the gift recognize that much of the wealth was built on a system of unsustainable growth and illegitimately externalized costs, per one Nobel Laurate, that included billions having and raising children in conditions that did not satisfy the standards children and their parents deserve, the standards that were eventually codified in the Children’s Rights Convention.

Informational flyer shows statistics about the benefits of family planning, emphasizing reduced climate impact, lower extinction rates, financial returns, and improved women’s education. The flyer promotes child-first family planning.

As such, the wealth was created by externalizing costs in derogation of the free and equal societies envisioned by the Convention, a mistake which should entitle future generations to compensation (in the form of the planning incentives/entitlements discussed below) that would move the world toward being comprised of such participatory and member-reflective societies. There are concrete guidelines for such a baseline, many of which are in the Convention, but also the restorative climate targets now being lauded by U.S. officials, democratic representative ratios, biodiversity standards, metrics for equality of opportunity, and metrics for levels of trust within particular political jurisdictions. The guidelines show an alignment of our most basic values, and around -280ppm restorative environmental policies, all of which begin with us truly constituting ourselves as free and equal people.

It was wrong to assess costs and benefits in the manner that produced current entitlements because it was done in derogation of our being the inclusive, member-empowered, and participatory groups required to make such assessments. Polities have no authority to assign entitlements if they are not constituting themselves fairly, in this way. That obligation is fully implied by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, including Article 16 and its reference to families, but was ignored during the critical phase of the last half of the 20th Century. The list of costs stemming from that error is staggering: Growing levels of birth-based inequity, rising numbers of unhoused persons, disruption of even existing systems of education, exacerbation of the conditions that drive pandemics, multiplying the climate crisis on multiple levels, degrading systems of participatory democracy, and the heightened risk of terrorism. There is also the knock on impacts of the relationship between population policies, the creation of communities and humans’ inclination to imitate rather than innovate beneficial behavior, and the inability to effectuate human rights amid the chaos of billions of people (including the commercial cacophony and other funded messaging ((including rent-seeking messaging from non-profits) that drowns out valuable truth), most of whom are not sufficiently prepared and empathetic to grasp and apply the system’s basic concepts.

Is there evidence that we see children as economic inputs, rather than citizens, and not deserving of minimum levels of welfare, equity, restored ecologies, and an influential voice in their democracies? The ubiquitous bemoaning of falling fertility rates as a “baby bust” economic crisis, with no plans to assure children the things described as various policies are offered to reverse the crisis, is ample proof.

Our work establishing this fundamental baseline for assessing costs and benefits, and the human rights nature of child-centric planning as oriented to protect the vulnerable parties at stake, has been subject to almost half-a-dozen peer reviews. And the claim that a fair start in life logically precedes governmental authority to issue the property rights on which the wealth was built – because we are before we do – seems irrefutable. How could we be self-determining or free in an anthropocentric world dominated by a singularly human-centric viewpoint, rather than a natural or nonhuman one – built into family planning – that allow humans to consent to the power of others? Without that primacy we never constitute fair, or free and equal, societies. We never create the consensual, inclusive, and participatory town halls necessary to actually regulate the wealth-building economies. Free people will condition their political obligations on their capacity, as equals, to change those obligations. Fair Start enables this.

A comparison chart of Current Family Planning vs. Fair Start Family Planning. The left side lists negatives of current planning; the right side highlights positive outcomes of fair start planning for welfare, equality, and environmental protection.

This is our challenge: If your plans are to give as reported, please designate at least part of the funds – by COP 27 – as human rights entitlements designed to move us towards the fundamental baseline discussed above, one which actually complies with the requirements of the international human rights regime. Surely, as things like the threat of climate-driven mass famine in the Horn of Africa unfold, it’s clear that our current, anthropocentric, isolating, and inequitable system of family planning was a terrible mistake. Fair incentives/entitlements, designed to build the town halls that liberate us, could have prevented that. If children deserve the funds, they deserve the efficacy putting the funds into bending the arc of planning and growth would produce through things like allowing delay and preparation, creating changes in family size, ensuring opportunities for co-investment, encouraging relocation etc. If it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a village to plan for one and there is a test for whether we are doing that consistent with human rights and democracy.

The entitlements are not paying for people. They are paying to convert – at the most fundamental or creative level – commercial relations into empowering democratic/normative relations, or the sort of town hall relations needed to regulate the second-order forms of shopping malls. If we value democracy it will be unreasonable for intending parents to refuse the empowering funds, and unreasonable for concentrations of wealth and power to refuse to give them. Whether we are part of groups of free and equal people first depends on whether we correct the baseline error described above (reiterated in the Cairo Consensus which wrongly treats the act of having kids as more self-determining for the parents than other-determining for the children born) and are part of efforts to ensure people are relatively self-determining through collective child-centric planning, or we are not part of such efforts. There is no obligation that can proceed this – becoming a just people.

Legal systems, markets, customs, etc., can only do so much to guide human behavior. The gaps depend on – and in government by the people should depend upon – the circumstances in which we are born and develop and which lead to our emancipation. The value of democracy – the “We the People” – includes the high quality of life sharing the world with people prepared for such systems – with a common core of objective values, prosocial dispositions, high levels of education and equity, etc. – would entail. The antecedent “we,” that proceeds all action, is actually a reference to power relations between people, and between people and their environment, that for self-governing people should arise from birth and development. Collective child-centric planning can get us there, but because group legitimacy derives from individual choice, each person must choose whether they support or reject fundamental fairness and choose to be part of just or unjust systems.

Without this change in entitlements, we risk a future – as the climate crisis deepens – where the system by which we made our wealth does more harm to future generations than our philanthropy can do to help them. We risk choosing not to constitute ourselves as free and equal people. and remaining part of an unjust and exploitative system. Instead, we can follow the lead of others choosing to reorient entitlements, and through that discourse and action, choose to be part of consensual systems of governance.

Thanks for considering, and for your work to date.

  • Ending Racism May Require Ending Birth Inequity

Ending Racism May Require Ending Birth Inequity

Ask most people to define racism and they will default to blaming individuals for discriminatory preferences. But could there be something larger driving racism? Imagine how a group of people would interact if some of those people had a tenth or even less of the wealth of the rest, and through that inequity, had a comparable lack of ability to set the group’s norms, whether in the context of politics, law, in settings of employment, etc. Would that impact – via power relations – how the group members interact?

A line graph compares median family wealth by age for White and Black Americans born 1943–51. White wealth is consistently much higher, peaking at $317,500 in their 60s, while Black wealth peaks at $54,800.

There’s no need to imagine such a thing. Persons of color generally have, because of massive and historic birth inequity, less money – and hence less power – than white people.

    And it’s getting worse.

The role of birth inequity should in no way be seen to diminish other drivers of racism, including the personal animus that does exist, and which has been shown to drive police brutality and other forms of violence inflicted upon the black community. Those forms of violence, and the need to defund the police committing them, as well as other drivers, remain key.

Infographic showing U.S. police shootings since Jan 1, 2015: Black people have 30 deaths per million (1,252 total), Hispanics 22 (877), Whites 12 (2,385), Others 4 (214). Blacks are disproportionately affected.

Regardless, the assumption that being born poor is ok may drive much of what we see as racism, and we can certainly understand why concentrations of wealth and power would rather blame it on individual preferences. And they may feel secure because the possibility of true birth equity – or equal opportunities in life – has largely been hidden behind a dominant norm that treats the act of having children as a personal or private matter that entails no or miniscule obligations from the wealthy to those having children who will be born poor.

Bar chart showing that in 2016, white families in the US had a median net worth of $171,000, while non-white families had lower median net worths: Black $17,600, Latinx $20,700, and Other $103,100.

    We can change that.

We can step around the curtain and demand the resources necessary to create true equality of opportunity, which is perhaps the best conception of human freedom. Why? Because a Fair Start in life is the first and overriding human right, preceding with justice the political systems that purport to assign property rights to the wealthy.

There are dozens of actions you can take to start this process. Act now.

Germany Begins to See Nature as Freedom. Target These People for Taking That Freedom Away.

A recent court case in Germany begins to recognize that nature, or a restored biodiverse ecology, is inseparable from the concepts of liberal democracy and freedom. Our right to nature is what frees us from the power of others.

These are the same points that Fair Start has made for some time.

So what do we do about that right? There are particular men who have, more than others, violated that right and robbed us and our children of freedom. We can target them to pay what they owe, by all means effective.

A middle-aged man with short brown hair and glasses, wearing a dark suit, white shirt, and maroon tie, is facing the camera and smiling slightly against a plain gray background.

Lee Raymond is one of those men.

To move the wealth he made by helping create the climate crisis into the most effective solution to the crisis would be a coup for freedom. Find and engage him, peacefully and lawfully, to pay what he owes, and we will share your story, and help expand the tactic towards others who are also responsible.

  • World Population Day: Two Activists Speak Out for Fair Family Reforms

World Population Day: Two Activists Speak Out for Fair Family Reforms

Jessica Campos and Prof. Delcianna Winders are champions for animals, working hard to protect them from abuse, and exploitation, in a variety of ways.

But they know we lose that battle if we do not go upstream, and deal with the way unsustainable and inequitable family systems are driving animal suffering and death, and leaving open the door for continued attacks on women by men that would force them to have children.

    Per Jessica:

A woman with long dark hair and red lipstick looks at the camera indoors, with her hand near her neck. The background shows a ceiling vent and a window with light coming through.
A person sits on a large rock in a grassy field, facing distant mountains under a clear blue sky. A small white dog stands near the rock, sniffing the ground. Trees and hills are visible in the background.

“The decision of not having kids, for me, was set in my early 20s because of overpopulation. I thought – why bring more kids? There are too many already needing homes. I also agree with the Taking Animal Rights Seriously article. It’s not fair that animals have to be killed mercilessly just for consumption. Low population is good for the environment and also for traffic congestion. There’s a lot of benefits that I see as a whole in not having kids.”

    And Delcianna said this:

A smiling woman with long, wavy blonde hair wearing a blue sweater and patterned top stands outdoors in front of a large tree trunk.

“It’s time we tackle the taboo topic of procreative ethics. Given the deeply troubling history of eugenics, the subject is fraught and may seem best avoided. But evading it denies millions of women access to basic family planning, exacerbating the climate crisis, global inequality, and more. For the sake of humans, animals, and the environment, we must grapple with procreative ethics and work toward just, rights-centered, and sustainable family planning policies.”

    TAKE ACTION:

There are dozens of ways to change family policies and bend the arc of who we are becoming towards justice. Act now.

World Population Day: Fair Start and Rejoice Africa Foundation’s Vision for a Better Future

    Guest author: Rejoice Africa Foundation

Who is Rejoice Africa Foundation? Rejoice Africa foundation is nonprofit charitable organization founded by indigenous people from the republic of Uganda with the same vision, mission and objectives in line saving the next generation. [Rejoice Africa Foundation replaces Kibengo Youths Care Activists]

    Vision

To strengthen the capacity of grassroots communities in preventing and alleviating climate risks and ensure that no life is jeopardized due to climate change impacts.

    Mission

Building resilience against climate change in Uganda.

    Objectives

Identifying multifaceted responses to conserve the environment, ecosystem and mitigate climate changes in Uganda.

To promote sanitation and hygiene for grassroots communities through establishing to improve air and water quality and reduce water bone diseases and ensure that there’s shelter and sufficient food.

Collaborate and involve grassroots communities to find and implement solutions to avert climate change induced poverty in youth.

Rejoice Africa foundation founding members based the entity on the following challenges facing today’s generations.

    1. Over population in Africa.
    2. Increased carbon emission and greenhouse gases (harsh climate change)
    3. Poor sanitation and hygiene.
    4. Poverty rates in Africa.
    5. Plastic pollution.
    6. Extinction of wildlife.

Overpopulation in Africa. In 1990, as the human global population reached 5,327,231,061. then in 2021 human global population reached 7. 9 billion people on global total land area of 13,003 million hectares. Rejoice Africa foundation predicts in 2100 the global human population will be 9,735,033,900 people on the planet earth. These will increase demand for food, water, housing, health, transportation energy, unemployment, instabilities and environmental degradation.

Please see an analysis Rejoice recently completed regarding population growth in Africa.

Rejoice Africa foundation is hereby suggesting the following strategies in human overpopulation on the limited global land area of 13,003 million hectares,

    1. Giving reproductive health education through secondary school for all with a particular focus on girls. as an important tool of empowerment, education can potentially provide young people with control over fertility especially among girls. COVID-19 has increased girls’ exposure to unwanted pregnancies due to limited access to birth control facilities in the health centers. In order to meet this strategy, RAF aims at promoting reproductive health education for all girls through peer-to-peer reproductive health education in identified secondary schools, avail learning materials of ways to control unwanted pregnancies.
    2. Assure universal access to a range of safe and effective contraceptive options for both sexes;

90 % of Contraceptives methods have been for only one sex (girls) and the have many side effects affects the girls/women leading to fear of acquiring contraceptives leading to lack of birth control. male sex contributes to population increase because one man can in pregnant 4 women daily if they are in fertile days whereas women can be fertile for only 7 days in the months and a pregnancy takes 9 months.  Rejoice Africa Foundation is calling for universal access fewer side effects contraceptives to all sexes (unisex contraceptive methods)

    1. End all policies that reward parents financially based on the number of children. Some countries support poor families with funds basing on size of the family members, these families tend to produce many children for targeting large family members that can attract governments to support them with a lot of funds. There is need for government policy makers to revisit and amend those policies for people to control birth rates.
    2. Convince leaders to commit to ending population growth through the exercise of human rights and human development. Through coalitions with other organizations, foundations, Rejoice Africa foundation is calling stakeholders.
    3. Menstrual hygiene for all girls/women of childbearing age.  most girls in developing world have faced poor menstruation care due to inadequate access to safe water and sanitary pads. Rejoice Africa foundation emerged to improve on water accessibility to all identified vulnerable girls in Uganda.
    4. Religious beliefs: some religion in today’s generation they oppose birth control methods they end up promoting population increase.

Rejoice and Fair Start working together

Rejoice leadership and Fair Start have both urged the United Nations, Partners in Population Development and other world leaders to adopt Fair Start or comparable family reforms, and mutually support calls for climate reparations based on correcting the baseline error that underlies current and near universal family planning systems, the error that is fundamentally driving climate change and massive economic inequity.

Poor sanitation and hygiene and end plastic pollution

A person stands next to a round structure built from stacked plastic bottles filled with sand or soil, outdoors near buildings and trees, with scattered bottles on the ground.
Figure 1 WATER TANK CONSTRUCTED USING PLASTIC BOTTLES
A group of students in uniforms stand in a line next to a lush cabbage garden, each holding a small item, with trees and a building visible in the background.
Figure 2 GIRLS RECIEVING SANITARY PADS

Plastic pollution is a fact and it’s widely acknowledged that world is midst of climate crisis.

Human activities such as use of non-biodegradable plastic materials have increased extinction of water animals, water volumes and land degradation.

In Uganda, plastic use such as form of drinking water and sodas have discharged 600 metric tons of plastic waste per day only 6% of plastic wastes are collected.

The remaining 94% of plastic wastes are not collected.

Indigenous people are not well versed with the innovation of reusing 94% of uncollectible plastics. These uncollectible plastics washed away by running water into water sources (lakes, wells, springs, Rivers and pods) and other can be covered by the soil.

Non-biodegradable plastic materials take many years to decay. High amounts of plastic wastes accumulated in water sources have resulted into reduced water volume for human consumption hence reducing rainfall cycle in the region.

Most schoolgirls who are undergoing menstruation period are directly affected because of inadequate access to clean water for hygiene and drinking.

They have suffered unhygienic menstruation management that increased fungal and bacterial infection leading to psychosocial stress in girls hence not learning well in class.

The country ends up having more school dropouts.

Re-using plastic bottles to construct rainwater reservoir tanks in schools has emerged as a major instrument to fight plastic pollutions and inadequate access to clean water supply to schoolgirls in Uganda.

It’s one of the numbers of innovative strategies targeted at reducing 94%of uncollected plastic bottles in the communities.

Improving accessibility of adequate water sources in schools will reduce school dropouts related to Psychosocial stress in schoolgirls.

Increased carbon emission and greenhouse gases

Enhancing Agroforestry/permaculture for Promotion of Climate Change Resilience, Eco social and rural livelihoods in Uganda.

Climate change is a fact, and it is widely acknowledged that the world is in the midst of a global warming Crisis. Human activities such as fossil fuel combustion and land use change have released greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which is the primary driver of recent climate change. Land use such as Agriculture alone, discharges more than 6 billion metric tons of greenhouse gases (GHG) into the atmosphere each year. Because of increased severity of climate change impacts on some Areas, the consequences have been more severe and disastrous.

In Uganda, climate change is a serious problem, affecting livelihoods. The country experiences prolonged drought, short and erratic rains which are disastrous and affecting Agriculture production, the backbone of the country.

Also due to disparities in traditional roles, societal expectations and livelihoods, men and women are affected differently by climate changes.

Women account for the bulk of Uganda’s Population of 23.19 million population.

They have lower wages, less access to credit, decision – making power and less control over resources all of which make them more vulnerable to climate changes.

It’s therefore important to consider differences when tackling the issue of climate change.

Agroforestry/ permaculture has emerged as a major instrument in the fight against climate change in recent years.  It’s a widely accepted answer to the twin problems of climate change and food security.

It’s one of a number of innovative strategies targeted at increasing production while also assisting in the mitigation of climate change by increasing carbon sequestration and boosting the system’s ability to cope with negative consequences of climate change mitigation and development of vulnerable group’s livelihoods such as women, by planting fruit trees alongside food crops.

  • World Population Day Letter to Warren Buffett: Please Give to Kids for This Reason.

World Population Day Letter to Warren Buffett: Please Give to Kids for This Reason.

Please Fund Children’s Bonds Because Children Deserve Them

    Dear Warren,

Fair Start Movement’s mission is to replace parent-centric subjective family planning systems with a child-centric model that ensures children are born and raised in conditions consistent – minimally – with the Children’s Rights Convention. Thank you for being a leader in the efforts to assure family planning needs are being met worldwide.

Given recent discussions of your possibly funding a world children’s savings bank, if these reports are true, we urge one simple guideline for such a plan. We urge that the gift recognize that the wealth of many was built on a system of unsustainable growth, per one Nobel Laurate, that included billions of persons having and raising children in conditions that did not satisfy the standards children and their parents deserve, the standards eventually codified in the Children’s Rights Convention. That explosive and unsustainable growth – at increasing cost to children as the climate worsens – enabled the wealth. Because that wealth was produced under a system that externalized its costs, disadvantaged children have moral and legal claim to part of the wealth as a form of restorative justice.

If your plans are to give as reported, please say it is because the children are entitled to it, and as part of a fair system of ecosocial family planning, one which actually complies with the requirements of the international human rights regime.

A comparison chart of Current Family Planning vs. Fair Start Family Planning. The left side lists negatives of current planning; the right side highlights positive outcomes of fair start planning for welfare, equality, and environmental protection.

A secondary guideline would structure the investment in the most effective way possible, setting aside part as Fair Start family planning incentives/entitlements/reparations, but the first guideline we urge is the most important.

Without this change, we risk a future where the system by which we made our wealth does more harm to future generations than our philanthropy can do to help them.

Thanks for considering, and for your work to date.
