What is it you're looking for?

As part of the Tell the Truth campaign Fair Start is this week doing a special appeal, reminding supporters that Amboseli is calling on the United Nations to elevate birth equity as the first human right:

From our friend Dickson Lekina:

I am writing to bring to your utmost attention a critical matter that requires immediate action and support. On behalf of the Amboseli school girls in Kenya, I am urging your assistance in providing financial support for their educational fees and reparations to rectify the injustices they have endured.

The Amboseli school girls are facing significant challenges in accessing quality education due to financial constraints. Without proper assistance, these bright and promising young women are at risk of having their academic journeys disrupted or halted entirely. We must come together to ensure that these girls are not deprived of their right to education and the opportunity to fulfill their potential.

Furthermore, there is a pressing need for reparations to address the past injustices and hardships that the Amboseli school girls have faced. By providing them with the necessary support and resources, we can empower them to overcome the barriers that have hindered their progress and facilitate their holistic development.

I firmly believe that by extending a helping hand to the Amboseli school girls, we can make a tangible difference in their lives and contribute to the advancement of education and gender equality. Your generous support and solidarity are crucial in making this vision a reality.

In light of the above, I kindly request your prompt consideration and action on this matter. Together, we can make a positive impact and create a brighter future for the Amboseli school girls.

Thank you for your attention and support. I look forward to your favorable response.

Give through Fair Start.

Warm regards,

Dickson Lekina

Reparations and Amboseli

As the sun beats down on the parched land of Amboseli, the effects of the ongoing drought become increasingly apparent. This once vibrant and flourishing ecosystem is now facing one of the worst droughts in its history, and the consequences are being felt by both the people and livestock who call this area home. Amboseli National Park, located in southern Kenya, is famous for its diverse wildlife and breathtaking views of the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro. However, this idyllic setting has been marred by the devastating effects of a prolonged drought, which has not only affected the flora and fauna but also the livelihoods of the local communities. The most visible impact of the drought is the scarcity of water.

The usually lush and green landscape has turned into a dry and desolate terrain, with rivers and watering holes drying up. This has left the animals, both wild and domestic, struggling to find water to quench their thirst. As a result, wildlife is often seen wandering out of the park in search of water, leading to human-wildlife conflicts. Moreover, the lack of water has caused a decline in plant growth, which is the main source of food for the animals. This has resulted in malnourishment and even death of some of the weaker animals. The effects of the drought are not limited to the wildlife alone.

The Maasai community, who are traditionally nomadic pastoralists, rely heavily on their livestock for their livelihood. However, with the drought drying up pastures and water sources, their cattle, sheep, and goats are facing starvation. This has not only led to a decrease in the quality and quantity of milk and meat production but also a decline in the value of their livestock. As a result, many families are struggling to make ends meet and are forced to sell their animals at lower prices, causing a ripple effect on the economy of the region. Moreover, the lack of water and food for their livestock has resulted in the Maasai being forced to travel longer distances to find suitable grazing lands. This not only increases their workload but also exposes them to other dangers such as attacks by wild animals and theft of their livestock. Additionally, the drought has also affected the availability of clean drinking water for the communities, leading to an increase in water-related diseases. The impact of the drought can also be felt in the tourism industry, which is a significant source of income for the region. The dry and dusty landscapes are not as attractive to tourists, leading to a decline in tourist numbers and revenue.

This, in turn, affects the employment opportunities and income for the local communities. In conclusion, the effects of the Amboseli drought are far-reaching and have a profound impact on both the people and livestock in the region. From the decline in wildlife and tourism to the struggles faced by the Maasai community, the drought has brought about significant challenges. Urgent measures need to be taken to mitigate the effects of the drought, such as implementing sustainable land management practices, providing alternative sources of food and water, and raising awareness about the importance of environmental conservation. Only through collaborative efforts can we hope to alleviate the effects of the drought and restore the once flourishing ecosystem of Amboseli.
