The #Famscam: Targeting a handful of high profile persons and organizations to tell the truth can save millions of lives.

Many companies, politicians, nonprofits, media and academics have been knowingly undoing the climate and other forms of progress they were claiming. They have been quietly choosing unsustainable, growth-based and inequitable family policies from which they benefitted, maintaining consumer demand, high long-run emissions, and favor among funders, at deadly cost to others.

A recent study, published in the latest edition of the Journal of Population and Sustainability, finds that more than three-quarters of the reductions in carbon emissions achieved since 1990 by increased efficiency and reducing carbon dioxide emissions have been cancelled out by these growth policies. That means pockets of massive wealth were created by misleading claims, and by externalizing basic costs on others, now putting millions at deadly risk.

Those quietly undoing their claims are driven by sources of funding that make money on growth, and as a result, as was reported in Newsweek, choose fundamentally unjust systems that will harm many. What caused the climate crisis? The lies about progress these entities told, and the fantasy world they created.

There are ways to fix this.

Always ask this question about fundamental power relations (a better concept than population), the place where many hide injustice.

A comparison chart of Current Family Planning vs. Fair Start Family Planning. The left side lists negatives of current planning; the right side highlights positive outcomes of fair start planning for welfare, equality, and environmental protection.

Ask anyone claiming to do any form of good, whether they are conservative, liberal or otherwise inclined, how they have accounted for children being born into the world, and whether they are investing in those children to give them a fair start, or exploiting them for growth. Do they support family planning entitlements that ensure parental delay and readiness, relocation, leveling the playing field for all kids, and smaller or more ecocentric families? Or are they putting millions of innocent lives at risk to make money?

Family reforms, like elevating an ecosocial Fair Start in life as the first and overriding human right that enables redistribution of resources from the wealthiest to the poorest, can save millions of lives. Read our petition before the United Nations to understand why fairness is the first human right. And there is no democracy without human rights.

Family planning, for decades, should have been determined by the incentivizing presence of ecosocial birth equity resources. Instead – according to one Nobel laureate – that wealth went to the top and created the climate crisis and vast inequity. Those continuing that system are skewing the baseline for climate reparations, benefitting themselves at cost to others, and putting millions of lives at risk.

The family reforms that would prevent these harms, when correctly researched and assessed, ensure all children a fair start in life by overriding current property rights to ensure that all children get enough of what they need in order to physically compromise legitimate democracies which are able to actually and fairly assign property rights.

    Fairness comes first.

    Climate crisis infographic

No theory of obligation to follow the law and respect the rights of others (including their claims to own their wealth) works unless it accounts for the creation of just power relations that give all a fair level of influence, and all power relations are fundamentally created at birth. Ignoring that fact is a scam that benefits some at cost to others, rather than discursive act of constantly reconstituting democracy – from the roots – through birth equity as an equal share of the power pie, so that all can freely negotiate things like written constitutions, contracts, corporate formations, employment relationships, etc. and other things that define our day to day lives.

Ending the greenwashing, the lies, can save lives. The most effective way to save children, animals, the environment, and human rights and democracy is through Fair Start reforms. Don’t get scammed.

Two panels compare family planning types. Left: diverse family illustration with bright colors, labeled Fair Start family planning with positive points. Right: grayscale crowd in a city, labeled Economic growth-based family planning with negative points.

Urging high profile persons and organizations to tell the truth and pay what they owe and change course will save those lives. And It is better to use things like voluntary climate reparations and other just entitlement systems to fund family equity, than to react to disempowerment in violent ways, the way some have and will, targeting innocent victims rather than those who actually benefited from the disempowerment.

Can this work in practice? Yes, we can derive obligation all the way back. Look at the Seeds program in Uganda, and give if you can. We are changing the fundamental nature of obligation, doing what the United Nations and other organizations that failed to uphold basic human rights should have done decades ago.

TAKE ACTION: Loudly engage those who benefitted most from unsustainable growth and the climate crisis – like the adult children of the wealthiest – to change course.

Or engage media directly, like the lead at the New York Times, to tell the truth.

Infographic explaining Fair Start impacts: Smaller families are 20x more effective at reducing climate impact. One million species face extinction. By 2100, population may double. Early childhood programs offer 13% ROI; family planning yields 600% ROI.
    Be effective.

Mother of Eight, Rachel Campos-Duffy Denies Climate Change. Take Action for Kids.

Does life imitate art? Fox News contributor an former Real World cast member Rachel Campos-Duffy evokes a scene from the famous movie, Idiocracy. As a mother of eight, she denies climate change and openly promotes the worst way to intensify it – more irresponsible family planning.

Fact: The root cause of most of our environmental and social crises, like climate change, massive inequality, child abuse, terrorism and social conflict, and the decline of democracy, come from one root source: poor and unsustainable family planning.

Is it fair that many of us have to worry about having one because people like her selfishly have eight?

Is it fair to put the burden of dealing with the fallout of her reckless behavior on her kids, as she suggests?

We all love our kids. We want the best for them. We have an obligation to ensure a future world that is safe and secure for them, filled with people who were born and raised with everything they need to work together for a better world. We should confront people that threaten our children and their future by promoting irresponsible and unsustainable family planning. We should not let the future for our kids be defined by people like Rachel Campos-Duffy.

    Take action:

Tweet Rachel @RCamposDuffy, and ask her to answer these simple questions: Do all kids deserve a fair start in life and how would you ensure that? Is having eight kids sustainable? What steps are you taking to make the future world safe and secure for you own kids?

Rachel is impacting the world we all share, and the future our kids will inherit. Help hold her accountable and urge her to engage on and debate the issues she raised.

  • One Mother’s Effort to Change the Way We Plan Families

One Mother’s Effort to Change the Way We Plan Families

Erika Mathews, Executive Director Having Kids, is taking the bold step of using her own family as a way to promote better family planning. This lone mother is breaking a taboo by speaking out about the need for everyone to choose smaller, better-planned families.

The well-known animal rights activist chose to have one child, Willow, age 11. Erika is now promoting a smaller family ethic and policies, which study after study have shown is the most effective way to solve key environmental and social crises, like climate change and rising economic inequality.

    • The most effective way to address many of the impacts on our environment and other species, like climate change, is by choosing smaller families. Yes, it’s up to 20 times more effective than changing diet or forms of transportation. By 2100, world population could vary by billions of people, depending on whether the average woman in the world today has one child more or one child fewer in her lifetime
    • The science of early childhood development shows the disproportionate impact the beginning of our lives has on the rest of our lives. This holds true, among other things, for economic inequality. Better family planning is the best way to reduce inequality. Other interventions are simply too late.

Why subject herself and her family to criticism? Erika says, “I care about my kid. I care about all kids. This is the most effective way to protect their future. What parent wouldn’t act to protect their kid?” For Erika the logic is simple. Smaller families can invest more in each child, and if parents take steps to plan their families, they can connect their kids with the crucial resources they need to have the most impact over the span of their entire lives.

Erika, through her organization Having Kids, is urging other mothers to speak out. “We can change the direction the world is headed. We just have to start this conversation.”

  • Real Love, In Action

    Real Love, In Action

Get parents talking about their kids and you’ll see a change come over their faces. The love parents have for their children draws out emotions that can’t be hidden, a unique connection that comes bursting through in giddy smiles.

But to truly love someone else means more than just having feelings. It means showing it through our actions. And when it comes to children, loving them means giving them all the time, energy, resources and attention they need and deserve. It also requires taking action in the community to build a better future, the future in which our children will live.

The two best things we can do for our kids are: 1. Build a culture of smaller and sustainable families that invests more in each child; 2. Make the world around all kids a better place.

Today many parents are starting to build that culture – families like the Marsh family, featured in the video above. They are leading by example and showing their love for their children, their communities, and for nature. We owe them for what they are doing.

If more families do this, we can change our policies to support those families. If we do this together, all our kids can live in a future world that is less crowded, safer, and filled with people that got a fair start in life.

The future does not have to be crowded and polluted, with a degraded climate and massive gap between rich and poor. But changing it depends on how we approach family planning. Together we can do this. Please join us!

Featured Family Counters Growing Royal Family

On the heels of announcements that Prince William and Kate Middleton are having a third child, another couple – Los Angelinos Mickey and Tricia Bhotiwihok – are setting a different example. Instead of putting money into their children, they are giving thousands to help other children.

Like Having Kids’ other Featured Families, Mickey and Tricia chose a smaller family. That decision also allows Mickey and Tricia to act on their altruistic natures and help other families.

To show just how powerful this approach to family planning is, Having Kids gave Mickey and Tricia a big choice: we sent them three thousand dollars that had been allocated for this purpose. The Bhotiwihoks could choose to apply this money to their family. Or they could donate the money. It was up to them.

Mickey and Tricia chose to donate all three thousand dollars to Project Healthy Children, a Givewell.org standout charity working on fortifying food for kids in the developed world.

They knew that the best way to ensure everyone’s kids live in a cleaner and safer world is to choose a smaller family and help other families do better too.

    Mickey and Tricia’s Statement
“Before discovering Having Kids’ Fair Start Model, we did not know there were other ways to approach family planning.  Instead, we relied on generational, social, and cultural norms passed down to us. After considerable thought, we adopted the Fair Start Model, because it just made sense. We are a family of four in which both parents work. Like all parents, we want the best for our children. We are also thinking of the big picture. The Fair Start Model provides an indispensable tool for families and children. Participation in the Fair Start Model demonstrates our commitment to a brighter world for all children.”

    Featured Families Form Community!

We are grateful to the Having Kids families that shared their stories of how they are giving their children a fair start. By having a small family, they can invest more in each child, use extra resources to help others, and make a better future for all. These stories are the beginning of a larger community where parents lead by example. If you care about your children’s future, join us at fairstartmovement.org.

    At Having Kids:

We promote and protect every child’s right to a fair start in life by replacing unsustainable, parent-centered family planning models with the human rights-based and child-centered Fair Start family planning model. The model suggests a shift in family planning from a subjective focus on just the parents, to an objective focus that considers the interests of the potential child, the parents, and the community.

It’s all about this: Smaller families working together to give every child a fair start in life.

Today many families are adopting the Fair Start family planning model. First, they try to give their child a fair start in life by having a smaller family where they can invest more in their child. Often they also foster or adopt one of the many children eagerly waiting for parents rather than creating additional need. Second, they publicly role model their choices. Finally, these families join public advocacy campaigns to shift resources from extractive centers of power like governments, corporations, and wealthy families in order to democratically empower children and future citizens by incentivizing better family planning by all parents. Why? All parents know that the quality of their own child’s life will depend on how other parents decide to have and raise their kids.

Jon and Astrid waited until their careers advanced before having their two boys because they wanted them to have the best start in life possible! Consequently, they’ve decided not to have more kids because of their belief in ohana, the Hawaiian concept of the intentional family rather than the biological one, which emphasizes the notion that families and their friends are bound together and all members of the ohana must cooperate and help one another for the benefit of every member. Jon and Astrid have elected to use the time and resources that would have gone into creating a larger family to help the families around them, the ones that will help determine the world their own children inherit. They are aware of the relationship between the family size choices we all make today, our world’s environment, and kids’ quality of life. They are hopeful that other families will join them too!

We support the Having Kids model because we want to live out our commitment to protecting children, the environment, and the animals with whom we share the planet. We believe that smaller, loving families are critical to our future—to giving children the care and attention they need to thrive and learn, to an earth that can sustain us, to a world where our fellow creatures have a fighting chance to survive and live lives free of human harm. Investing our resources in fewer children means more attention to each child, a lesser impact on an already fragile planet, and a greater fostering of community. And because having fewer children means we have extra resources, we’re able to give to organizations that promote environmental protection, public interest causes, reproductive rights, and animal welfare. We also recognize that the surest way to create change is to start at home, and for that reason we’re are proud to support the Having Kids model and committed to instilling in our son the values it represents.

The decision to have one child was initially difficult. It became easier as I spoke with other families who had multiple children. I made a decision to focus my resources on one rather than have them compete. By making this decision, I have made a step towards a better life for my child and the community. The Having Kids model is consistent with my belief that change starts at home. Connecting with other like-minded people ensures a better world for my children and grandchildren. Becoming a parent has made me want to connect with others to prompt change. The Having Kids model provides me with a way to accomplish these goals.
