For all of the reasons given above, many reasonable people would consider the young mother taking peaceful action to achieve birth equity for her future child, and setting an example that others might embrace to protect all future children the height of working towards freedom and justice. Free people will follow rules that start by limiting the influence others have over them. The process of her seeking birth equity would be, in that sense, liberating.

The Most Impactful Climate Action You Can Take? Get the Fair Start Reparations You and Your Children Are Owed.

The climate crisis is not just about emissions. It’s about how children, animals, and adults will actually experience the crisis, and that depends long run on the mental and physical resources they have, their location, those people that surround them, etc. And that depends on what they have at birth.

Impact, on many levels. depends on how we have kids.

The climate crisis, caused largely by generations of extreme wealth and wealthy families in colonizing nations, is actually threatening to kill untold numbers of children in poor families – those least responsible for the crisis.

A chart with circles of varying sizes showing the impact of different actions on reducing carbon emissions. The largest circle says “Have one fewer child 58.6”. Other actions include living car-free, recycling, and using green energy.

    Is that fair?

Would it be wrong for a young woman with little wealth or income intending to become a mother to demand birth equity resources – resources that simply ensure a level playing field for her child and thus offset the harm – from a wealthy family that externalized the deadly environmental and social costs of its wealth upon the child she wished to have? What if that family exploited that birth inequity and growth to not only harm her future child, but ensure that child would be likely to work for little money for the wealthy family and their children? What if the young woman were black, and whose child would have 9/10th less wealth than white kids because they would be black, and the white family she asked could afford to share by choosing to have fewer children?

What if the wealthy family had made their money by lying, greenwashing and otherwise hiding the true costs of their wealth?

What if the young intending mother were unable to even challenge the injustice of birth poverty and ecological injustice through participatory democracy where her voice actually mattered, because those systems never really represented the constituents they claimed to? What if she intended to use the resources she secured to engage in better way of planning for – and thriving in – families, one that left the racist ecocide and other mistakes of former generations behind?

A line graph compares median family wealth by age for White and Black Americans born 1943–51. White wealth is consistently much higher, peaking at $317,500 in their 60s, while Black wealth peaks at $54,800.

Consider this fact: People, not documents, constitute nations, and the creation of their power relations through birth and development – by definition and inevitably – determines whether they are relatively self-determining or determined by others. These relations are part of the implied “we” in every statement, the often-unspoken presence of the dominant political/legal system – usually the nation – from which the statement is orienting. How would you ever really account for inclusive power relations to allow a say in what the law should be without starting at creation, and accounting for the move from minor to adult that makes persons full citizens capable of making the rules.

You would not, and the failure to halt the climate crisis is evidence of this. And there is a clear formula to assess reparations. The would-be mother would be truly constituting democracy, speaking the truth and logic of self-determination to power.

Infographic comparing Top Down Power vs. Bottom Up Empowerment for birth equity, listing social impacts of each approach—including potential risks like legitimacywashing when using top-down strategies. Includes icons of people, scales, graduation cap, and supportive hands.

So . . . if that young mother were charged with trespassing in making the demand, could she challenge it – and expect a jury to side with her – because the state cannot limit access to property without first empowering (actually or physically constituting) its people to be involved in the making of such property rules, i.e. empowering them through just the sort of constitutive discourse in which she seeks to engage? How do we every get to governance by the people without elevating her pre-political right above the process-based rule of trespass? Do we really choose to constitute our relations via top-down force in a system run by men, versus a system of bottom-up empowerment run by women, via the act of care?

Her act is fundamentally liberating, and the best explanation of political obligation, because free people will start by limiting and decentralizing the influence others have over them.

This is not theoretical. A complaint reflecting the right to make such demands is now before the United Nations, to benefit the most vulnerable communities impacted by the crisis.

Free persons will not follow laws in systems that fundamentally disempower – that create lots of persons as cheap labor and consumers for shopping malls where they do not make the rules – rather investing much in developing them as citizens for town halls where they do.

Two panels compare family planning types. Left: diverse family illustration with bright colors, labeled Fair Start family planning with positive points. Right: grayscale crowd in a city, labeled Economic growth-based family planning with negative points.

For all of the reasons given above, many reasonable people would consider the young mother taking peaceful action to achieve birth equity for her future child, and setting an example that others might embrace to protect all future children the height of working towards freedom and justice.

There would be serious winds at her back, as a true total liberation protester:

    • The billions who would get a fair chance in life rather than be born, work for the wealthy, and die – all in poverty.

She would be ensuring self-determination for many, true freedom, instead of them being determined by others. What is the right way to deal with someone who insists on participating in a system that risks millions of lives in order for that person to make more money?

An infographic compares two options: on the left, gray figures under “People without real say over their government,” and on the right, colorful families with “Smaller & better democracies.” Text promotes smaller families for fairer representation.

She can leave the money with the wealthy family, knowing it was made at cost to others, or move it and save lives. She can empower children equally and help solve another problem: Acts of mass violence do not stem from mental illness as much as from a sense of disempowerment, and the need to matter in one final act within what shooters perceive as an unjust world. We were sold sustainable town halls where we matter and can control the world around us to a degree, but got unsustainable, massive shopping malls where most do not matter and have no say. And those that benefitted from this system, at cost to others, want to block media from reporting things like mass shootings to hide the costs of their systems.

The young woman’s move would start to reverse that. While coercion would be counterproductive, she would have better justification for it than the state. If we are really self-determining and politically equal, that means we are invested in and empowered enough to offset each other’s capacity for self-determination equally as nations grow, so that each person can influence the rules under which they have to live and be free enough to look into each other’s eyes without fear or deference.

Those on whom she would make the demands – who would choose preventable deaths – seem tiny and worthy of targeting relative to all of that. Her move to demand is a move towards knowing her and many other children, under a test laid out by one of the leading political philosophers in the world, will live free.

Do you support an academic institution? Most of the academics in debates about family reforms contradict in their writings the basic values they exhibited throughout their lives, e.g. seeking minimum thresholds of personal welfare, expecting equal access to opportunities, participating in and adherence to political/legal systems that purported to represent the governed, use and enjoyment of an environment relatively conducive to human and nonhuman health, etc.

Given their privileged intergenerational positionality, and the fact that they sent their lives generally relying on and participated in legal/political systems of coercive obligation that benefitted them at cost to others, they should at least begin from a default or provisional position of extending those values to future generations by saying – as a fundamental premise of justice over top-down power – that basic human rights systems should prioritize the child welfare/equity in instruments like the Children’s Rights Convention over parental subjective choice in the ethics, law and policy of family planning, population, and procreation so that future generations can also debate these things from the comfort and security these academics do. Urge any academic institution you support to back Fair Start family reforms.

The FamScam: Timeline for How Nonprofits Knowingly Undercut Their Own Claims, Putting Millions at Risk to Benefit Wealthy Funders. But There’s a Fix.

Are the charities you fund undoing their own good? Find out before you give, and if organizations do not promote climate restoration via birth equity, and admit mistakes that led to the climate crisis, find out why. Where do your organizations fit in the timeline below?

Recently an article in a progressive publication challenged claims made by the Animal Legal Defense Fund (Fund) about their work, revealing that if one were to factor in family policies, the organization’s support for status quo family inequity was actually undercutting animal rights and exacerbating the climate crisis – putting many more animals in harms way than the Fund was saving with low-impact “distractivism” lawsuits, and skewing the baseline for climate reparations to at-risk nations in a way that risks millions of lives. The organization made claims, good for fundraising, that created a fantasy world of progress, forestalling life-saving climate reforms that would have challenged white supremacy and ecocide.

    Protecting the Planet Infographic

This issue had been brought to management, who ignored it, and went as far as quietly withdrawing litigation that would have changed that status quo, and would have set the stage for a very specific birth-equity based policy change that could save millions of lives and trillions of animals. Many funders had objected to the suit, refusing to admit that the growth economics through which they benefitted has done more harm through climate impacts than than their philanthropy had done good, and refusing to recognize the way child welfare and human rights claims limit property rights.

Many other organizations are implicated in this scam.

But there is a fix. The Tell the Truth campaign.

    Be effective.

Just ask the right questions of any person or group claiming to do good: Ask anyone claiming to do any form of good, whether they are conservative, liberal or otherwise inclined, how they have accounted for children being born into the world, and whether they are investing in those children to give them a fair start, or exploiting them for growth. Do they support family planning entitlements that ensure parental delay and readiness, relocation, leveling the playing field for all kids, and smaller or more ecocentric families? Or are they putting millions of innocent lives at risk to make money?

Find out where the organizations – from foundations, to companies, to media, to political parties etc. – you support fit into the FamScam timeline below. Some will claim this is not their issue. How can we do anything that does not involve other persons, and the relationships created through family policy? We can’t. What those insisting on ignoring family reforms really mean is that they are choosing status-quo policies from which they benefit at deadly cost to others. They are choosing injustice, often to benefit their rich kids at cost to others.

Two panels compare family planning types. Left: diverse family illustration with bright colors, labeled Fair Start family planning with positive points. Right: grayscale crowd in a city, labeled Economic growth-based family planning with negative points.

    Timeline:

2008-2018: Multiple peer-reviewed research articles published showing a baseline error in climate policy that meant three-quarters of the mitigation efforts were being undone with pro-growth family policies that exacerbated inequity, policies the actually violated human rights obligations (actually reversing reproductive justice and autonomy for future generations) and risked millions of lives. Research showing the error is consistent with criticism by Nobel laureate Steven Chu, and many other laureates, regarding cost externalizing systems, and evidence that economic channels had fundamentally replaced democratic ones in terms of allocation of power, raising fundamental questions of legitimacy. The error simply involves the failure to derive political obligation back towards intergenerational justice, rather than stopping the analysis at static baselines. The error involves the failure to connect family planning to child rights and welfare systems, a move that ensured sufficient population growth to fundamentally create the climate crisis and vast inequity. That underlying fact, and the failure to address it, means most claims of sustainable, green, regenerative, ecocentric, humane, etc. activities were false, creating a fantasy world of progress that never existed.

2018: The Animal Legal Defense Fund files a federal suit to reverse this process, using an animal liberation or ecocentric standard for climate reforms. The claim is simple – to constitute a free and just society first requires climate restoration via a right to ecosocial birth equity, and this is consistent with guarantees of a right to autonomy in the U.S. Constitution. The suit calls for ppm reductions a third or more greater than the Paris Agreement.

2018-2021: The anthropocentric-based Paris Agreement on climate reform is seen to be a failure,  as average temperatures as expected to well exceed 1.5C. At the same time the Fund comes under sustained pressure from Our Children’s Trust and many funders, both of whom embrace an anthropocentric over ecocentric policies for climate reform and climate reparations, to drop the litigation.

2021-2022: Leadership and funders at the Fund are repeatedly advised that ecological baseline and family policies are undoing the organization’s beneficial impacts, making fundraising and other claims suspect, as the climate crisis accelerates and the cost of inaction rises. They are also advised in peer-reviewed publications that they are creating commercial noise in the space that drowns out messaging on effective work, The threat of climate change to U.S. national security interests becomes clear in a widely read GAO study. It’s evident institutions can leave money wrongfully taken at the top, and many will die, or it can be used to change the way we plan families and save lives.

Spring 2022: The Fund and other organizations quietly withdraw the litigation, choosing status quo policies that minimize climate reparations, and hide their priority over property entitlements, putting millions at risk while many in leadership at the organizations personally benefit. That same year WHO reports rising deaths from an accelerating climate crisis.

January 2023: A whistleblower piece is published in Newsweek, detailing the events. The writing discusses reparations that are not theoretical, but already being paid out.

January 2023: Mainstream media, under pressure from funders, continue to urge growth policies, including abortion bans. In some cases media like the New York Times did more stealth advertising than covering how family policy was exacerbating the climate crisis. The Wall Street Journal and different factions of Effective Altruists (EA) at Vox emerge as a major driver of this messaging, redirecting attention and decoying audiences away from discussions of climate change liability and the possibility of direct action-based demands. In the case of (EA), many advocates who undercut equity turn out to have paid for the proliferation of their philosophy with money that they made externalizing costs on then most vulnerable. The discourse affirms the laureates’ claims, that family policies were the fundamental source of economies quietly replacing democracy as centers of influence, with citizens slowly being disempowered through those policies.

February 2023: Direct action activists whose work had been exploited by the Animal Legal Defense Fund begin to assert actual animal personhood via a right to rescue, and to win cases, which show limitations to property rights similar to the Fair Start child welfare-based limitations on macro propertyhood in the nonhuman world inherent in anthropocentric policy.

June 2023: Additional allegations about the Fund come to light in a long-form article, including an investigation into the Executive Director who withdrew the litigation and was subsequently replaced. The article affirms racism and other issues consistent with the organization’s refusal to promote racial equity in family and environmental policies.

June 2023: Climate reports show disastrous warming and total failure of anthropocentric policies. Infants are shown to be significantly harmed by temperature and other changes as the crisis accelerates.

July 2023: Fair Start Movement, in conjunction with the California’s Green Initial Public Offering (IPO), announces a pilot Fair Start Certification standard, and green/growth-washing filings targeting nonprofits, companies, foundations, etc. engaged in the FamScam for deadly harm caused to at-risk victims in nations around the world. The standard 1) uses international human rights law, not purely domestic standards, which is required for the climate crisis – but in a way that includes domestic remedies, 2) sets the highest standard for climate reparations rather than undercutting victims’ claims, 3) mandates direct family-based reparations, which have the greatest impact, and 4) corrects the baseline error or fallacy discussed above, including climate migration and pro-labor/equity employment policy changes.

The Fair Start certification program is a fundamentally a human rights certification. It’s standards track capital itself, and forthcoming state attorney-general complaints, Lanham and other tort litigation – tied to climate loss and damage cases – will target relevant green/growth-washing claim, in many contexts. Because green/growth-washing comes from business, charities, media, politicians, academics, etc., all of whom are responding to capital which is predisposed to green/growth-wash.  Our lives and freedom are determined by obligation, and the dominant one is law. The fundamental creation of power/obligation relations – our birth and development – should have been determined over the last several decades by incentivizing resources that would have ensured birth equity for all children, and equal influence over the laws under which we must live. That never happened, but climate reparations are a chance to change.

By Intentionally Ignoring Growth and Inequity Nonprofits, Media and Business Leaders Created a Fantasy World of Progress That Prevented Real Climate Reforms, and Will Kill Millions

Companies, like Huggable, have supported reform. Others can also make the family connection now and use their truth-telling to reverse course. They can support climate reparations as equity-based family planning entitlements and effective role modeling to ensure not only reduced pollutants, but migration and resource-backed resilience in the children that will be born to ensure the highest form of climate justice, one called for by a slew of Nobel laureates,  and the only one compliant with human rights norms.

TAKE ACTION: Ask anyone claiming to do any form of good, whether they are conservative, liberal or otherwise inclined, how they have accounted for children being born into the world, and whether they are investing in those children to give them a fair start, or exploiting them for growth. Do they support family planning entitlements that ensure parental delay and readiness, relocation, leveling the playing field for all kids, and smaller or more ecocentric families? Nobody Would Talk About Underpopulation if We Had to Actually Invest in Kids. We Do Have to Invest. Target the Wealthy to Pay.

Countless media stories today are flooding our brains with stories of an underpopulation crisis, falling fertility rates, and women liberated from being mothers-in-waiting.

What if we had to ensure every child born a fair start in life, with all the things we would have needed and wanted as a child? It’s unlikely we would hear about any underpopulation crisis, or see so many men pushing women to have kids.

You would not see many abortion bans either. These conversations are premised on the idea that we can exploit children as cheap labor and voracious consumers.

But the truth is we do actually have to invest that level in kids, at least the minimum spelled out by the Children’s Rights Convention.

And guess who has to pay for it?

Extreme concentrations of wealth today do not reflect the costs it imposed on others, fundamentally, the costs its production imposed on our ecologies and climate (creating the deadly crisis), and the way it was produced through unsustainable population growth that was achieved by not ensuring children the expensive birth and development conditions – including racial equity – they are promised under the Children’s Rights Convention.

Instead they became dumbed-down consumers and cheap future labor. Governments went along with the lie because they got the benefit of more taxpayers.

Line graph comparing average family wealth by race/ethnicity from 1963–2016. White families’ wealth rises steeply, far surpassing Black and Hispanic families, showing large racial wealth gaps widening over time.

Given that the Convention spells out the minimum standards necessary to ensure children what they need to build legitimate systems of human rights and democracy, our governments were never authorized to assign the property rights wealthy people think they have to their wealth. They would first have to pay the proportional costs, through things like family planning reparations to future generation, to own that wealth.

People like Elon Musk may be bemoaning falling population numbers, but the children of his native South Africa – and intending mothers – actually have a claim to his wealth to bend the arc of de-growth even further. He certainly owes it, born a rich white kid who fled South Africa with wealth during apartheid.

How those families take what they deserve, the distraction of effective altruism aside, is another matter.

But those trying to redistribute the wealth that was stolen, and to make a better future, are the freedom fighters of today.

What’s an Effective Tactic to Reverse Climate Change and Inequity? Directly Engage Rich Kids like Ireland Baldwin to Pay What They Owe.

Both the climate crisis and the massive gap between rich and poor fundamentally derive from the same thing: Family policies that exploit the nonhuman world as a human resource, and which do nothing to ensure all children equality of opportunity. Those policies prevent human freedom, subjecting us to the will of companies like Exxon through our environment, and creating a hierarchy of power based largely on whether we were born rich or poor.

    Is this fair?

Wealth was built by externalizing costs on freedom, by being able to consume the nonhuman world, and benefit from the growth not having to invest equally in children allowed.

Older generations of wealthy people often either have trouble understanding this, or simply do not care. Their adult children, who benefitted from more aware systems of education, are different. They have more at stake in the future, understand that large and consumptive families are not sustainable, and can often see their unearned privileges.
