The book Winners Take All helps us understand how philanthropy over the last decades failed in ways that ensured the climate crisis.

But author Anand Giridharadas, @anandwrites, misses the most salient example of the failure:

How we collectively violated children’s right to a fair start in life by not using the Children’s Convention as the standard in family planning regimes. Instead, under the veil of family privacy, we assumed children of color deserved fewer resources and more risk. That did more to harm all of our values and missions than we did to further them because the power dynamics that choice created degraded the ecological capacity of the planet to ensure infant health – the first and only measure of value.

Ask anyone claiming to add value to the world how they are accounting for children entering it, and whether those claiming to add value are more likely to 1) assure minimum levels of welfare, or 2) exploit a lack of protection to benefit from growth-based investments.

You will likely find the value claimed being undone every day as children enter into conditions that do not ensure what those kids need, and at levels that degrade their environments and disenfranchise them politically. Make sure to measure the harm from a zero baseline that captures all the harm, and not the narrow metrics that caused the crisis.
