    Factchecking the Weeden Foundation.

Funding that ensures no child is born beneath a set level of entitlement, consistent with the Children’s Rights Convention and Right to a Healthy Environment, is exponentially the most just and effective way to protect our future and free all of us. We can do it using the extreme wealth in the world today that was made by not paying the costs of avoiding harm to future generations.

This transfer is also required by law, in things like the Children’s Rights Convention and under the Right to a Healthy Environment. All law must first be interpreted to assure legitimacy, or the measurable inclusion and empowerment of those subject to it, so that truly representative government is possible.

But there are specific barriers blocking this work.

There are wealthy families and other concentrations of power in those nations most responsible for the climate crisis who benefitted from unsustainable reproductive rights models. These models used a false premise (that having children is more personal than interpersonal) to avoid the overriding need to ensure measurable empowerment of each citizen, or to first account for our generational, racial and other positionalities in reforming legal systems.

This subverted the civil rights and anti-apartheid movements by undoing with family inequity upstream the good they claim to be doing downstream – a move that exponentially catalyzed the climate and related crises, while aiming the harm of the crises towards the least responsible for it, and most vulnerable to it. If the Three-Fifths Compromise made fractionalized the worth of persons of color, one-tenth and greater illegal disparities in generational wealth, disparities that violated legally enforceable children’s rights regimes, will now mean the death of millions of children of color in a climate crisis caused primarily by white wealth.

These unsustainable models and systems ensured the overshoot of ecological carrying capacities, the degradation of those capacities, and the disempowerment of the average person to respond to the ensuing crises. The models allowed wealthy white families to amass wealth, at illegal and deadly cost to generations of black families. These wealthy families and other entities are now funding charities, media, politicians and academics who silo social justice issues away from birth equity, and use omissive messaging that hides their liability, and illegal macro entitlement systems ensuring the death of millions as the climate crisis accelerates.

    • The Weeden Foundation claims: “The Foundation embraces the protection of biodiversity as its overarching priority. Frank Weeden, the Foundation’s founder and original benefactor, established the Weeden Foundation to address the impact of growing human populations and overuse of natural resources on the biological fabric of the planet.”

    • Fact: The Weeden family and Foundation do not treat equity as a fundamental value in their work. Under their model the least responsible for the crises we face today suffer the greatest cost.

    • Not prioritizing reforms that measurably ensure a fair start in life for all children has done exponentially more harm to biodiversity – given the role of entitlements in the climate crisis –  than the Weeden Foundation has done to protect it. Even if other forces, like the church, had blocked equity in negotiating international regimes it was incumbent on leaders not to relinquish it as a goal. They did.

    • First constituting a legitimate entitlement system, by ensuring all kids a threshold of intergenerational justice that includes an influential equity stake in their democracies as their first birthright, is first and necessary condition for justice. Instead, under the status quo, nations use a narrow view of autonomy to enable a woman to terminate her pregnancy only to die months later in a heat wave because she was born black and hence with a fraction of the average wealth, could not afford air conditioning, and had little influence over her political system. By dividing bodily autonomy from political equity, and our generational and other positionalities, governments are killing millions.

    • The alternative would be for free persons to condition any obligation to follow the law on being empowered. How can states entitle anyone’s wealth, or claim authority to use coercion to defend entitlements, without first including and empowering their constituents.

Infographic from Fair Start Movement detailing how funding every child’s right to a fair start benefits children, climate, animals, democracy, and equality—with brief descriptions and relevant icons for each topic—while highlighting the need to avoid practices like legitimacywashing that can undermine genuine progress.

    Ensuring Justice for All

Fair Start is now urging states attorneys generals and other responsible agencies to 1) track the multifaceted impacts of infants entering the world in the U.S. and abroad on their and their mothers’ capacity for self-determination – the highest standard for evaluation, using the eight concrete metrics urged as the zero-baseline form of harm-assessment standardization at the United Nations. We are asking these and other officials to then 2) contrast these impacts with current and historic (ten years back, as a minimum) sustainability and equity claims, and the use of fundamentally unsustainable and fraudulent family entitlements used by prominent leaders and organizations within their jurisdictions. This tracking enables  preemptive reparations, structured to prevent harm to future generations and their right to self-determine.

Under this entitlement scheme there are two standards for justice: The real or what should have been, measured at a zero baseline using concrete markers for assessing equity, and self versus other determination. There was also a widely used decoy standard, which centered on assumed legitimacy of white wealth supremacy at birth, and an illusion of bodily autonomy that conflated freedom with the capacity to harm others.

Those who use the latter are choosing that the least responsible for the climate crisis suffer its greatest cost, with no justification.

This is a fair question: Are concentrations of wealth, like the Weeden Foundation and other assets held by the family, now partially subject to climate reparations claims? Do they owed enough funds to be used to reform the fundamental reproductive rights models and compensate victims? Will Donald, the foundation and the family back reforms that will offset their benefits, consistent with their stated values?

Donald Weeden’s life is worth no more than the lives of children who will otherwise die in a crisis without a change in incentive structures, and abandonment of models derived from fallacies that benefited Donald and his family.

Donald should admit birth inequity did more harm than he did good, and any role he had in promoting the idea of biodiversity that would be undone upstream by not ensuring infants measurable capacity for self-determination. If he truly valued things like biodiversity he would be eager to cover the costs of not having previously included the value in our basic systems of obligation, and to include the value going forward.

Infographic titled Inequality and the Climate Crisis: How did we get here? with text blocks explaining causes like prioritizing economy over rights, disenfranchisement, ignoring the 1/10th wealth gap, and impacts on families. It also highlights how practices such as legitimacywashing contribute to the problem by masking systemic failures under a veneer of responsibility.

    Background: Hidden and deadly racism

The climate and related crises we face today were largely driven by the absence of any child equity and empowerment standards in near-universal reproductive and human rights regimes dating back to 1948.

The wealthy families and governments driving these regimes were avoiding measurable democratic equity as the overriding value behind political legitimacy, and evading its ability to override existing entitlements. But by avoiding equity, they seeded racist inequity,  unsustainable growth that would trigger the climate crisis, and the development of fundamentally illegitimate political systems that never measurably empowered their subjects enough to gain representative capacity and authority.

These families have historically subverted civil rights and anti-apartheid movements by undoing with family inequity upstream the good they claim to be doing downstream – a move that exponentially catalyzed the climate and related crises, while aiming the harm of the crises towards the least responsible for it, and most vulnerable to it.

By isolating women in the family planning process and ignoring child equity, wealthy families have for decades ensured inherited poverty, or commercially exploitative rather than legitimate and inclusive relations. “The real trouble with eugenics is not that it can be coercive; it is that the state can use it
to create the citizens it wants to govern.” If we look beyond individuals and towards the nature of our relations, how is the ubiquity of economic pronatalism in the face of the climate crisis not evidence of this occurring?

Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “What does it profit a man to be able to eat at an integrated lunch counter if he doesn’t earn enough money to buy a hamburger and a cup of coffee?” That condition derived fundamentally from the use of illegal family entitlements that undermined all civil rights and created a generational apartheid that Fair Start and others is now dismantling with women’s networks in the United States and Europe engaged in reparations recovery and preemptive self-defense.

Two panels compare family planning types. Left: diverse family illustration with bright colors, labeled Fair Start family planning with positive points. Right: grayscale crowd in a city, labeled Economic growth-based family planning with negative points.

    Fundamental illegitimacy

As discussed above this created a fake, top-down version of social justice based on hollow legal institutions and laws that never derived from any legitimating authority, but rather hid the actual creation of power relations in birth, development, and emancipation. They did so by using a narrow conception of reproductive autonomy to fundamentally cloud our conception freedom, and our ability to differentiate between self versus other determination.

If after 1948 national legitimacy and authority were contingent on inverting the flow of authority from government to the governed, this move represents the height of colonization because it assumed claims to authority wealth that should instead have gone through a process of familial legitimation. Not doing so cannibalized freedom, taking from us what we are owed in democracy and trying to sell it back in commerce. The difference between self-determination relative to zero baseline markers, and exploitation, is what these families owe in reparations. Without fair starts in life, there is no capacity to form organizations of persons capable of representative governance, via the measurable self-determination of its constituents. Family planning reparations enable this process, and given that wealth was already  taken and the benefits already consumed, it is owed as share equity (equal offsets of influence relative to zero) for each child.

Wealthy families and other concentrations of wealth and power in those nations most responsible for the climate crisis are now funding a fantasy world of charities, media, academics, etc. who use omissive messaging to evade the liability they and their children carry from inequitable growth. They frame what is obligatory as charity. They use decoy versions of public interest work – by organizations, academics, media, etc. – the impacts of which are being exponentially undone, each day, by family policies that enrich mostly white families at deadly cost to countless children of color. This involves literally using wealth made at cost to their stated missions to drown out the voices of the vulnerable, who could actually accomplish the mission through more fundamental reforms.

Don't Get Scammed: Charities, Media and Big Business Use Family Policy to Quietly Undo Progress. Ask This One Question Before Giving, Believing, or Buying Infographic

There is no legitimacy authority or entitlements without the measurable political equity, or entitling children enough so they offset each other’s influence relative to a neutral position – testable through things like the feasibility of a constitutional convention. Instead, the model urged by these families assures zero functional protections for infants and animals, and uses a sleight of hand that conceives of freedom in terms of an arbitrary form of autonomy from the state, rather than as political equity to choose who has influence over you, ecologically and socially.

Here are questions for anyone claiming to do good in the world today: How can we assure justice without improving the conditions in which children are born and develop, given the intergenerational justice requirements of minimum thresholds for all children? How do we become free without honoring the rights of others, especially the future majority? If you value some outcome, who will cover the child inequity and entry costs to that outcome – growth undoing climate mitigation, for example – and evade more of it? Is the entity doing more harm than good by ignoring entry without equity? What formula do they use to assess damages in climate, civil rights, environmental justice, etc. cases? How do they define the term power in the context of being free from power? Who is their intended audience?

The families and concentrations of wealth and power driving the fundamentally unfair systems have never created value, relative to an objective standard like a healthy climate. Instead they first used poor family planning to create their own audiences and artificial demand by treating children as means rather than ends, ensuring dismal standards for child development and education, violating children’s rights and treating people as economic inputs rather than citizens while benefiting from the appearance of inclusive and functional democracies where the average vote was actually being diluted to uselessness. A system of fundamental entitlements likely to kill millions of innocent persons is generally considered a failure.

Activists now with the Fair Start Movement, in prior employment, had to omit facts that would have shown public interest information and interventions being vastly undone by growth and inequity. This was a charade of environmental sustainability and social justice that is still today being vastly undone every day as children enter the world without the resources they need. These families routinely funded decoy nonprofits that silo social justice into various downstream issues in order to hide upstream entitlement and reparations fraud, using a false premise to benefit from a system that undoes the good they seem to do. This does more to benefit the rich, white children of the funders backing their programs, and at deadly cost to countless children of color, than it does to accomplish the missions.

    Taking action

As discussed above, Fair Start is now urging states attorneys generals and other responsible agencies to track the multifaceted impacts of infants entering the world on their capacity for self-determination – the highest standard for evaluation, using the eight concrete metrics urged as the zero-baseline form of harm-assessment standardization at the United Nations. We are asking these and other officials to contrast these impacts on the most vulnerable and numerous entities, with fraudulent sustainability and equity claims, and the use of fundamentally unsustainable standards, used by prominent leaders and organizations.

The disparity between what we think and say, and the reality of what we do to children and animals relative to objective measures, opens a doorway to legitimacy and freedom.

To constitute, as in national constitutions, means to be obligated. Our debt to children is a chance to actually constitute a just society, and from the base rather than under the standards of those who act as if they are above us. Covering these costs as an obligation, before taxes, liberates more than oppresses. But this requires, and would be impossible without, the admission of the specific harm we have caused and the linguistic inversion of our obligation from those in power instead towards infants and animals. Where else would liberating / obligatory relations come from? This requires reprioritizing wealth to incentivize and entitle would-be mothers so that no child is born beneath a measurable threshold of self-determination.

An Open Letter to ReproAction and the Center for Reproductive Rights: Abortion Rights Can Override Governmental Authority

National legitimacy derives from and is contingent upon including in a measurable way subjects as free and equal constituents, so that they have the capacity to choose who has influence over them, and legal institutions have the capacity to represent its constituents. Reorienting from being obligated top-down to empowering from the bottom-up also holds promise to reduce violence by rejecting any legitimate representative authority of the state to use it to block reparations, or to otherwise role model illegitimate violence those around us. If we never treated others as ends in a political system, such that their influence offsets equally, why do they owe us duties, to respect our lives, for example?

There is now an action before the United Nations that redefines what it means to constitute a just nation where subjects are empowered enough in the creation of actual relations, through birth, development and emancipation, to move from being treated as subjects to being included as constituents, and obligated to follow laws only because they have the measurable capacity to control the legal system. Those who do not back ensuring all children a fair start in life logically fall outside of any system of collective obligation, and protection.

The action before the UN seeks to escalate climate and other reparations – specifically designed as family planning entitlements – by trillions of dollars, through the concept of equity fraud, in order to save millions of lives. Many are using illegal tactics to block the high valuation.

But the UN work goes beyond targeting greenwashing towards finding the concealment of liability for the death – through a sustainability scam involving both false and omissive claims – of millions in the escalating climate crisis. Some of the most falsifiable claims were made in the animal rights sector, in a #demandscam where charities focused on vegan food reforms that benefitted their funders, knowing full well that growth was undoing the benefits for animals.

By revealing the truth, Fair Start reforms become an evolution of animal rights towards a more macro level: If we can’t steal abused animals because animals are not property, if in fact we  are only saving them, then we also can’t reduce them to property in human reproductive rights regimes that ignore their rights, and do not treat children well enough so that they would be inclined to treat animals well.

    The base, not an option

Every entity in the United States should be forced to comply with civil rights laws prohibiting discrimination in hiring, housing, education, etc. But not extending protections to infants who would suffer the consequences of historic injustice – maintaining the separate but equal doctrine there – was a horrific mistake. It seeded in our brains the idea that our birth and developmental positionality was organic, rather than the result of illegitimate policy.  But the mistake is one that we can fix with universally preemptive standards for fair starts in life.

Antiracism requires removing a system of birth entitlements where children of color get a tenth or less of the wealth as white kids, are largely excluded from the political system, and bear the deadly cost of an ecocide they did not create. Thresholds of protection for birth, development and emancipation enable a permanent resistance to oppression by linking the measurable needs of the most vulnerable to our own liberation.

Fair Start’s action before the United Nations enables this liberation. It simply asks anyone relying on any legal authority to derive back to the most preemptive source of legitimacy, an exercise that inevitably ends with the need to prioritize entitlements that would measurably empower all children through improved birth and development conditions, ensuring them a fair start in life and share equity in democracy.

What is the Fair Start Movement? A Constitutional Watchdog Asking Questions and Seeking One Change: To Start All Fully Accounting for Freedom

We make sure those claiming to do good are not quietly undoing it, for their own benefit. We simply ask: For any claim of doing good, how is the one making the claim accounting for the most impactful factor: The resources and empowerment with which children enter the world and are measurably empowered to constitute a legitimate nation.

This question identifies constitutive reparations fraud by publicly asking how claimants account for children entering the world on their claims of beneficial public impact, given that there are no functional reparative protections for infants entering the world, and the animals and ecologies with whom they interact. This is not about population. It’s about lies and omissions to gain power.

If the claimant valued some outcome, who will cover the child inequity and entry costs to that outcome –  growth undoing climate mitigation, for example – and evade more of it? Is the claimant doing more harm than good by ignoring entry without equity? Do they start with enabling the powerful over the vulnerable? Did the claimant spend more on undoing their mission than furthering it? What formula do they use to assess damages in climate, civil rights, environmental justice, etc. cases?

These questions involve looking for an omission, and a belief that children of color deserve less, and should suffer the brunt of a climate crisis they did not create. The question creates a permanent resistance to oppression by testing authority to see if it is fully derived and conditional, and identify frauds that would use authority without that derivation and conditioning.

Why watchdog? The most just and effective form of social change involves accurate and truthful communication, constitutive language, as itself an act of empowerment.

The Quiet Subversion of Civil Rights Using Child Inequity

Concentrations of wealth and power in the Twentieth Century have used child inequity to subvert the civil rights movement, and evade race and other reparations. This was and is reparations fraud, and the hiding of a share equity deficit that is killing children of color. This fraud – like the omissive use of language that assumes black lives are worth less –  clouds the language and concepts needed for universal reparative justice, and the fact that by ignoring ecosocial birth equity, most philanthropy ensured the climate crisis and did more harm than good.

“I advocate that Black birth equity, through reparations, should be the primary action taken to resolve consequences such as corporation induced climate change — in particular, because those who are negatively impacted the most are Black communities in California and their future Black children.” — Dr. Breeze Harper

It was the philanthropy of wealthy families not accountable to election or market forces, rather than small business or government, that for decades envisioned and articulated insufficient standards – devoid of child equity – for social justice, environmentalism, animal liberation, etc. The crises we face today were exacerbated by those standards, which had more to do with growing generational wealth than good outcomes.

These families and their concentrations of wealth and power have not created value. Instead they first used poor family planning to create their own audiences and artificial demand by ensuring dismal standards for child development and education, treating people as economic inputs rather than citizens while benefiting from the appearance of inclusive and functional democracies where the average vote was actually being diluted to uselessness.

By isolating women in the family planning process and ignoring child equity, wealthy families have for decades ensured inherited poverty, or commercially exploitative rather than legitimate and inclusive relations. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “What does it profit a man to be able to eat at an integrated lunch counter if he doesn’t earn enough money to buy a hamburger and a cup of coffee?” That condition derived fundamentally from the use of illegal family entitlements that undermined all civil rights and created a generational apartheid that Fair Start and others will dismantle with women’s networks engaged in reparations recovery and preemptive self-defense.

These are the efforts to repair that inequity by ensuring no child is born outside of a system of debt and reparations accounting, so that no child is born beneath a line of measurable empowerment. Freedom is an objective and measurable concept, linked to historical ecological and social markers that are tied to birth and development but often ignored. What was owed in birth equity, and one’s influential share in democracy, was instead taken and sold back in growth-based economies.

    Reparations Fraud

Reparations fraud is subject to legal action, especially in cases where the evaluation of damages will rob victims of what they deserve because the targets of the reparations claims have already received the benefits, often under false pretenses.

Reparations fraud involves literally using wealth made at deadly cost to the values they claimed to further, wealth that is defended by the violence of the state, to drown out the voices of the victims. It usually starts with siloed forms of justice minus the generic, or active, component of constituting just power relations in the birth, development, and emancipation of the most vulnerable. For example, white animal rights advocates might use base assumptions about the nature of animal law that disable its ability to benefit animals.

The omission of information on child entry conditions hides liability – and rights to self-defensive reparations – for deadly climate harm to millions of children of color who are born with a tiny fraction of the wealth of white funders’ kids.  The fix? As described in detail below, to use measurable standards for true social justice and ecological restoration to ensure accurate climate reparations pegged to the self-determination of each child entering the world.

Because the creation of one’s positionality relative to others and ecologies is legally preemptive, it enables drastic action to recover reparations. Humans need law for the vulnerable amongst us, so there is no law, or obligation to do what others say, in a system that starts with punching down on the most vulnerable. And if our oppression comes in our creation it becomes almost  impossible to see and remove without an objective touchstone – like offset, or zero, baselines.

Not backing the reform raises serious questions about whether entities were trying to create value, or free ride at deadly cost to others on their generational, racial, national and other positionality. Fair Start is not asking those we engage to not do their downstream work. We are asking that they orient from a base upstream that does not undo the work they claim, one contradictory not only to their values but a host of inseparables – like animals rights, which is the most demanding form of social justice and the most current coopted – as well.

How Do You Hide Reparations Liability? Create Decoys of Social Justice Devoid of Equity.

Many funders, in those nations most responsible for the climate crisis, are using institutions and individuals –  media, decoy nonprofits, universities, agencies, think tanks, celebrities, etc.  – to create a fantasy world of equitable family planning, green environmental sustainability and social justice impact that is being vastly undone every day as children enter the world beneath the minimum of what they are owed. These entities are literally using wealth made at deadly cost to the values they claimed to further, wealth that is defended by the violence of the state, to drown out voices of most victims.

Wealthy families in polluter nations use low child welfare standards and massive inequity to undo upstream what they are pretending to do downstream – selling vegan products in growth markets that do more harm to animals than our sales do good, suing over immediate threats to endangered species that will go extinct long-run, centering children’s needs well after they arrive in the world and most of the damage is done, focusing on political candidates when their ability to represent is being slowly eroded.

These charades of focusing on symptoms more than cause did more harm than good, clouding the language of liberation. Funding a Fair Start in life with the accurate language and the move towards climate reparations owed is the most just and effective way to free children, animals and the rest of us – exponentially more so than other interventions. It avoids the fraud of dumping costs on future generations, a move that caused a white wealth-driven climate crisis mostly killing persons of color. As discussed below, violence is one of the costs.

For decades FSM members were employed and worked with such entities, and we benefitted at deadly cost to others by omitting information about the fundamental harm we were causing, and in a way that enriched mostly white children and killed mostly children of color. We now work to identify those using the fraudulent standard, especially the most influential.

We identify reparations fraud by publicly asking how they account for children entering the world on their claims of beneficial public impact, given that there are no functional reparative protections for infants entering the world, and the animals and ecologies with whom they interact. Normally the benefits claimed were actually being undone, and in ways that benefited the ones making the claims, at deadly cost to others.

The Way Out: Invert You Obligation from Non-representative Government to the Governed and Most Vulnerable

There is no way to be free without this public process of communicating, this constitutive discourse. There is no racial justice in language that assumes children of color are worth, in terms of birthright, a fraction of the wealth of white children. And there is no justice without subsequent actions that ensure our taking only the equity we all deserve so we can self-determine and make our own choices, rather than determine and choose for others. It is physically impossible to be obligated as a political equal without doing this because there is no more basic system of valuation.

There is no form of autonomy that would not have had to start positioning the person with share equity in their political system.

There is no freedom without share equity in one’s political system, and no system of valuation that would not start with the evaluator’s position in that system. Those entering the world are either not empowered, or we all have no choice but to be subjected to their power and influence – including the degradation of the environment around us. We should instead empower the governed, not the government and the wealthy, and not skew the criteria needed to assess truth and value by excluding and exploiting others.

A chart with circles of varying sizes showing the impact of different actions on reducing carbon emissions. The largest circle says “Have one fewer child 58.6”. Other actions include living car-free, recycling, and using green energy.

Fair Start is not asking those we engage to not do their downstream work. We are asking that they orient from a base upstream that does not undo the work they claim, one contradictory not only to their values but a host of inseparables as well, and one that continues the performative decoy of social justice, the abstract charade of ignoring creation, that ensured black children are dying in white wealthy driven climate crisis where the death debt carried by wealthy families is only rising. And yet no child’s life is worth the life of another.

Insistence on non-constitutive claims, and benefitting at deadly cost to others, identifies those who choose to free ride on their generational, racial, national and other positionality, and improve their position in an exclusionary and illegitimate system rather than act to legitimate it. To be free is to relate to others as self rather than other determining, and that – as well as representative government or legitimate demand and audiences, is physically impossible without accurate communication of that positioning and obligation, situating oneself as free.

Infographic titled Better Family Planning, Simply Put with icons and three points: Delaying parenthood, smaller families, and community support, each explained with brief text and blue graphics.

Violence, both from the state and those around us, fundamentally derives from this because it seeds fundamental injustice, making government representatives very non-representative, and  breaking any functional form of obligation to follow the law because children are never empowered in the system of making it. Logically, we would owe each other as much as our nation owes children as they enter, defining what we sort of a “we” the nation is. There are the just and unjust, and the latter choose to fall outside of social obligation and protection.

Why? Because there is no inherent authority in government, or inalienable rights, that is not receded with an collective pronoun that implies an obligation. There is no way to constitute justice, and an obligation to follow the law from the top down, enabling the powerful over the vulnerable. Free persons see obligation as deriving from and conditional on being empowered, something fundamentally contingent on the creation at birth of the relations we have with others.

Several hands of children placed together in a supportive stack, with the text: The most powerful social justice is a fair start in life. and Having Kids: Planning a fair start at the bottom.

This is not Kantian ethics or intersectionality – both of which hid that which would create the climate crisis. It focused on the primacy of positionality in creation, and obligations to the most vulnerable using zero baseline accounting linked to concrete ecosocial metrics, a zeroing out of debt in the tradition of a businesses practice, rather than the abstract, upside down, and static ethics of old.

For example, when Mbabazi Judith,  a three year old in Uganda, died from climate exacerbated malaria, she did so, comprehensively, because she was not positioned to self-determine but rather be determined relative to a unified zero marker that explains many variables from permissible emissions to national representative ratios.  The inclusion and empowerment line can be seen as a mirror to divisions in apartheid-based regimes, where the most influential who do not admit the omissions and harms described herein and take action to erase divisions by moving kids over into empowerment can be targeted for leaving them in inequity. In this case getting all children above the line unifies rather than divides, and evades using the same fundamentally illegal system – based on violating children’s rights that caused the crisis

The wealth we see in the world today was made, firstly, by illegally avoiding paying the costs needed to protect children, animals, the environment – and measurable freedom for all of us.  Making sure – at grassroots, organizational, and legal levels – that no child is born without climate reparations accounting does protect them.  Once one accounts for the common omission of the impact of children entering the world without what they need, we can see Fair Start as exponentially more just and effective than interventions without the qualifier.

On any given day countless companies and nonprofits funded by wealthy families make claims about creating benefit. The entities routinely omit key facts that would show the benefits being undone, omissions that make the claims fraudulent.

Fraud Includes Omitting Facts Regarding the Largest Drivers of the Issue Being Discussed, Facts Which Matter Most to the Most Vulnerable

The claims many of these entities make to creating benefits are cancelled out every day as children enter the world in ways that degrade their ecologies, and without the resources they need. For example, wealthy families will often fund animal protection organizations that choose low-impact policies that avoid revealing the impacts of children entering the world on animals, even if that process does more harm to animals than the organizations are doing good.

The omissions avoid anyone seeing and examining the harmful underlying illegal entitlements being used by those making the claims. Why? These entities are often orienting from entitlements (like the capital driving fossil fuel production) that are now owed to those suffering deadly costs and must now be used to offset massive harm. The entities, like Exxon, frame all language to avoid discussing basic entitlements.

In contrast, many children enter the world without the first birthright entitlements that allow legitimate cost/benefit analysis, any authoritative distribution of the benefits and burdens of living,  and which create an obligation to follow the laws that protect the beneficiaries of any political system.

    Green New Deal

These are the entitlements that comprise a measurable capacity to engage in democracy (which as the climate crisis unfolds is better understood as physically baselined share equity – equity, like equity in a company, where you have a measurably equal and influential role in outcome) and beneath minimum rights-based thresholds of wellbeing, thereby degrading their own environment and the legitimacy of their political systems, and exacerbating the climate and other crises we see today.

They are also skewing the baseline for climate damage assessments in a way that is killing millions, using the same formula Exxon uses, and which argues that the wealthy have fundamental freedom or birthright to harm whereas future generations have no rights – or survival at best rather than true self-determination.

How Do You Destroy a Planet's Atmosphere? Tell Lies. Fair Start Certification Tells the Truth Infographic

How inaccurate are the claims, given the omissions?

Try the vast majority of climate mitigation efforts undone by growth, the democratic representatives the Times routinely focuses on barely representing their constituents by any reasonable ratio metric, and wealth disparities that are both exponential, deadly, and largely accounted for by birth, developmental, and emancipatory positionality.

This is the fundamental driver of the crises we see today.

An editor at a major U.S. media outlet told Fair Start activists that the outlet would never cover the full impacts of growth on animals, while simultaneously covering sensational but low-impact animal rights campaigns. The campaigns are funded by a wealthy family that made money on growth-based food investments which, on balance, did more harm to animals than the family’s philanthropy has  done good. The outlet routinely published media urging women to have children, with no safeguards, during the climate crisis, and misleading articles criticizing the idea of equality of opportunity and minimizing the role of family wealth in controlling United States politics. Environmental and animal protection funders, nonprofits, and their media did more to empower the industries they claimed to oppose than the victims they claimed to represent.

Would it not be better to actually benefit nonhumans, and humans, on balance?

Top Down Power and Bottom Up Empowerment

Why the Entry of Children Into the World Matters Most

Systems ensuring children entering the world as such – without share equity entitlements – degraded your ecological and social self-determination, and that of the children born, because the systems are using the children for economic growth rather than treating them as the constituents of democracy.

Nations cannot legitimately assign entitlements without continuously constituting themselves in way the measurably empowers each citizen. It’s called share equity – which again is like equity in a company, where you have a measurably equal and influential role in outcomes. But right now most nations treat their constituents as economic inputs, consumers and workers designed for growth, rather than citizens with an equal and effective voice in their political systems. Governments take a share of wealth in the form of taxes, rather than justly entitling it first to ensuring the entry threshold for children.

Many involved in Fair Start work were paid by their employers to omit from public statements how growth was undoing the claimed benefits for animals, and other EA favored outcomes, and enriching mostly white children at deadly cost to black children. These employers were often funded by interests that benefitted from growth, e.g., vegan food investors.

TAKE ACTION AND KNOW HOW TO MEASURE AND COLLECT THE THE DAMAGES CORRECTLY FOR WHAT YOU ARE OWED:

There is now an effort to legally preempt and – through crowdsourced action – shift illegal entitlements in order to evade millions of climate-related deaths. The United Nations has implied, through decades of work and decisions, that fair starts  in life for children, defined by the metrics below, is the first and overriding human right. Urge it to say so expressly.

    Human Population and extinctions infographic
By Intentionally Ignoring Growth and Inequity Nonprofits, Media and Business Leaders Created a Fantasy World of Progress That Prevented Real Climate Reforms, and Will Kill Millions

All policy starts with who we should be, or children’s rights and the line or threshold of true self-determination below which children should not be born, and above which children may be born. You either agree to that line as a primary obligation or not.

That line is set to a threshold of zero based on hard metrics linked to physical conditions in the world, and it is much is easier to see and achieve in a collective setting like care modeling than a nuclear family. This is a binary choice between acting obligated towards bottom-up systems of investment and inclusion, or top-down systems of governmental violence that exploit low levels of child welfare to create growth that kills animals and destroys nature.

One either chooses higher climate and related damage assessments (on eight levels at least) based on true freedom, or lower assessments that continue the paradigm of the powerful determining the vulnerable. The former is the standard for terms like “green/sustainable,” “democratic” or “inclusive” that would have saved those dying in the crisis. The latter is the standard rich investors use to make money.

Infographic about Fair Start family planning, highlighting climate impact, reduced extinction risks, 600% return on investment, findings by Nobel laureate Heckman, and the benefits of smaller families for sustainability.

For truly free persons who wish to orient their lives based on a system of being empowered with share equity rather than living under extreme wealth entitlements made via inequity, backed by state violence that cannot be justified, there is no obligation that comes before ensuring the thresholds for being and development, described below. Doing so constitutes freedom at the first border of power, a border that overrides and precedes national borders.

We owe our first obligations to the governed, and the future majority, and never the government which has no inherent authority – especially not to protect concentrations of wealth and power, and those that lie for them. Why focus on Singer? Animal liberation, and the legal system necessary to achieve it, is perhaps the highest ideal of human progress to date. Defining that idea in a way that evades critical protections for nonhumans, and enables today’s catastrophic state of affairs, causes harm by decoying efforts away from effective work.

    Reality, equality, equity, and liberation

Here are eight metrics, and how then can be used to assure share equity entitlements, including reparations for climate harms.

Again, they set line, linked to physical conditions in the world, that creates a binary choice between acting obligated towards bottom-up systems of investment and inclusion, or top-down systems of governmental violence that exploit low levels of child welfare to create growth that kills animals and destroys nature.

We cannot evade impacting all these values when we have children. For those who made fraudulent claims that are being undone relative to these metrics, and who choose to benefit at deadly cost to others, consider the horror stories at the end of each values when engaging to hold them accountable for choosing fundamental injustice.

This is not intersectionality. Think of the values below all together as different sides of what it means to be free. Many children die every day because they are born without these entitlements, and all are inseparable and determined when we have children above or below the specific line of ecosocial inclusivity.

    1. Welfare – ensuring things like health, nutritional and educational outcomes that are measured based on the world as it would have been had the United Nations in1948 actually used self-determination – rather than reproductive isolation of families – as the standard for who we should be. Google terms like “conviction” with terms “child abuse” and “child torture.” Those refusing a threshold benefitted from the suffering your are reading about to make money on things like growth-driven investments.
    2. Equality of opportunity – ensuring that one’s birth and developmental positionality is not a dominant factor in things like the income or savings one accrues in adulthood. What is it like to know you will work for others, be under their rule, just because of your birth positionality. It’s a life of doubt and subservience, driven by those who refuse equity. When we factor in deadly racism, extreme action is expected to save black lives: How is it not racist to back a system of birth entitlements where children of color get a tenth or less of the wealth as white kids, are largely excluded from the political system, and bear the deadly cost of an ecocide they did not create?
    3. Nature/environment (e.g., measurable emissions) – limiting emissions to levels that would not have caused the crisis, generally less than 280 ppm, and requiring the restoration of full biodiversity towards optimal ranges consistent with low-end UN growth projections. Current growth and wealth-based high emissions standards have already dilled millions. How should we treat those willing to choose a standard from which they benefit, but that kills others?
    4. Successful parenting – ensuring that parents do not regret having children, including eliminating cases of neglect of abuse, through successful planning. All of the child neglect and abuse you may find online represents a failure for the parents too, but parental regret for a life largely lost is another measure to see what those refusing delay and readiness for an equity standard of birth and development are ready to saddle others with.
    5. Having an equal and influential share to determine all laws, including constitutional provisions – limiting  representative ratios to those fitting with low-end UN growth projections. When some choose to other-determine rather than self-determine, by choosing economic families over democratic ones, it robs you of your freedom. How do free persons deal with such threats, and how have they in the past?
    6. Democratic, not economic, levels of trust – Metrics for trust among citizens must show their willingness to trust each other with legislation, and all lesser included forms of trust that implies. How much do you trust those around you, how is that related to those persons not getting what they needed growing up, and how does that impact your quality of life?
    7. Real efficiency – Ensuring outcomes, like gross domestic product, are based on the inclusion of others as equals tracked through birth, development, and emancipatory conditions that comply – minimally – with the Children’s Rights Convention and Right to a Healthy Environment as well as correlative rights and obligations, This means not exploiting others in disregard of the capacity of all to contribute highly. Many academics urged measures of efficiency that exploited children in a way killing millions. Whether a famous academic, or leading economist, how shall they be held personally accountable for benefitting at cost to others, and through a choice of fundamental systems characterized by top down coercion rather than bottom up inclusion and empowerment?
    8. Self-determination, or share equity, to limit the influence others have over you – Whether you are free requires an amalgamation of the other metrics above. How could your self-determination not be limited by those entering the world?  In this value, It would not seem to be limited if the average person were not really being empowered at birth, but being exploited by others. Many died defending notions of freedom that were less clear than what has been laid out here.
  • Feeling Lost in the Crowd? Target Those Responsible for Deadly and Illegal Growth

Feeling Lost in the Crowd? Target Those Responsible for Deadly and Illegal Growth

Children will die in the climate crisis. Why?

Because a few men in leadership continue to favor profitable population growth over sustainable and equitable family planning entitlements – entitlements that better the way we plan families and has the greatest impact, fulfilling the first human right. Instead of fairness, these man urge birth policies that create growth but violate children’s rights, and now millions will die as the climate crisis escalates.

Continuing growth will ensure those least responsible for climate, inequity and other crises suffer their greatest consequences. We can change course by targeting these men, much the way movements in the past focused on choke points to make true change.

Who is an example of someone that could change course, and thus lead as a role mode in funding family planning entitlements and reparations? Men like John T. Raymond.

Infographic comparing Top Down Power vs. Bottom Up Empowerment for birth equity, listing social impacts of each approach—including potential risks like legitimacywashing when using top-down strategies. Includes icons of people, scales, graduation cap, and supportive hands.

To avoid scams, see the truth, and identify the choke points you can ask one simple question of any person or group claiming to do good: What have you been doing to deal with the basic connection between children being born, and things like child welfare, the climate crisis, animal rights, or anything else you might claim to care about?

There are essentially two answers to this question: Those who are actually accounting for children’s rights as the first form of justice in the constituting of actual human power relations, through things like using birth equity as a human right to restore the climate. And those who are not, among whom many are knowingly undoing their own fundraising and other claims, and exploiting future generations and nature to benefit a few.

    ‘

Infographic titled Inequality and the Climate Crisis: How did we get here? with text blocks explaining causes like prioritizing economy over rights, disenfranchisement, ignoring the 1/10th wealth gap, and impacts on families. It also highlights how practices such as legitimacywashing contribute to the problem by masking systemic failures under a veneer of responsibility.

This question helps us spot the #famscam. It’s a scam run by nonprofits, media and businesses – making it seem like we are reducing or refining consumption, and reducing climate emissions, through abstract top-down reforms, while quietly, bottom-up increasing the number of consumers to maintain profits margins.

The pro-growth policies they hid undid roughly 3/4ths of the climate mitigation attempted in the last few decades, and ensured there are more animals in factory farms, less wildlife and nature, and greater inequity, than ever before. That undoing will kill millions.

  • Urge Harvard’s President to Go Beyond Admissions Policy and Embrace Basic Justice, a Form That Goes Above the Supreme Court

Urge Harvard’s President to Go Beyond Admissions Policy and Embrace Basic Justice, a Form That Goes Above the Supreme Court

Urge Dr. Claudine Gay to go beyond micro-equity towards macro-equity, the basic norm that is necessary to legitimate the Court.

Recently Harvard’s brilliant new President, Dr. Claudine Gay, released a statement on the litigation around Harvard’s admissions policies, in which she urged promoting equity. Those statements could be based on an error/fallacy/impossibility that actually blocks equity, an error her predecessor committed when making misleading claims about Harvard’s impacts – misleading because they did not factory in the role of underlying family equity policies.

Harvard’s own research suggests we must start there, and admissions policy aside, that fundamental inequity has quietly been getting worse.

Fair Start politely submits a few questions for Dr. Gay to consider: How are you accounting for children being born into the world (the creation of actual power relations), and whether the political systems we all back with our taxes, and otherwise, are investing in those children to give them a fair start, or exploiting them for growth? Did you assume the legitimacy of the Supreme Court’s decision without conditioning that legitimacy on the creation – via the obtaining of children’s rights – of fundamental childhood relations in a way that actually empowers people, consistent with what is implied our being free and equal persons by the preamble of the Constitution? Admissions equity aside, would you consider supporting family planning entitlements that ensure parental delay and readiness, climate-safe migration, leveling the playing field for all kids, and smaller or more ecocentric families such that each person plays an equal and influential role in creating the rules under which they must live?

Without the fairness in creation we may be quietly undoing the values we want to further. And by making statements about furthering articular values at a micro level without addressing them at a macro level, we are reinforcing a system that is fundamentally unjust, one that hides power to reserve it. The connection, in the case of the animal rights movement, was recently exemplified by a dispute at a well known organization. It was previously exemplified by media around our ask of the British royal family, and its obligations to others.

Two panels compare family planning types. Left: diverse family illustration with bright colors, labeled Fair Start family planning with positive points. Right: grayscale crowd in a city, labeled Economic growth-based family planning with negative points.

What’s the underlying problem? Multiple peer-reviewed research articles have been published showing a baseline error in climate policy that meant three-quarters of the mitigation efforts were being undone with pro-growth and inequitable family policies. Those policies ensured generational wealth disparities, exacerbating inequity, and also set the stage for today’s coercive pronatalism. The same policies actually violate human rights obligations, reversing reproductive justice and autonomy for future generations, bringing children into conditions that violate the Children’s Convention, and risking millions of lives.

The error simply involves the failure to derive political obligation all the way back towards intergenerational justice, rather than stopping the analysis – as is common – at static baselines. The basic condition of any rule is that it should be fair, but the first rule does not regard how we should act, but rather whom we should be. Returning to the preeamble question above, if the condition were met we would be able to break each fundamental polity into a functional constitutional convention at any time. That is not the case in the United States today.

If governance derives from the people then constitutionalism, or the limitation and decentralization of power, starts with the creation of relations, not written documents. That process is antecedent to government issued entitlements – like rights to extreme wealth or the authority of institutions like the Court – that ensure massive ecosocial inequity. Because of this error we do not really empower people, as we ignore the fundamental creation of their power relations, and as such our language and actions create a fantasy world of freedom that never sufficiently limits and decentralizes power. If freedom always requires some level of self-determination, it would be impossible to ensure without birth and development conditions for all children that meet minimum thresholds so they can self-determine rather than be determined by others, and one test for whether that is occurring equitably would be treating growth as inverse to self-determination, relative to nature (which requires, at a minimum, climate restoration).

Free persons will condition their obligation to follow the law on their being empowered – relative to the ideal – to determine it, and how it limits and decentralizes the power others have over us.

The climate crisis exemplifies the need for this perfectly, and calls for fundamental macro change with every micro change we seek so that we do not undo our values and accept any obligation to follow the laws when the systems that make those laws cannot possibly be inclusive and participatory, and are not reflective of the will of those they control.

The error – at base – stems from world leader failure in the Twentieth Century to connect family planning systems to child rights and welfare systems, a move designed to shield concentrations of wealth and power from redistributive obligations, one that ensured sufficient (and profitable) population growth to fundamentally create the climate crisis, and vast inequity. That underlying fact, and the failure to address it, means most claims of activities being sustainable, equitable, inclusive, green, democratic, regenerative, ecocentric, humane, etc. were false. We were knowingly undoing them, at deadly cost to others.

Our lives and freedom are determined by obligation, and the dominant one is law. The fundamental creation of power/obligation relations – our birth and development – should have been determined over the last several decades by incentivizing resources that would have ensured birth equity for all children, and equal influence over the laws under which we must live. That never happened, but climate reparations are a chance to change.

Infographic explaining Fair Start impacts: Smaller families are 20x more effective at reducing climate impact. One million species face extinction. By 2100, population may double. Early childhood programs offer 13% ROI; family planning yields 600% ROI.
    Be effective.

Solution: Use Fair Start certification, and truth-telling to reverse course. We can support climate reparations as equity-based family planning entitlements, and effective role modeling, to ensure not only reduced pollutants, but migration and resource-backed resilience in the children that will be born to ensure the highest form of climate justice, one called for by a slew of Nobel laureates,  and the only one compliant with human rights norms. Those reparations are not theoretical, but already being paid out.

Birth justice and autonomy occur in a larger context of societal autonomy based on birth equity for all, and extreme measures are warranted as a provisional matter to evade irreversible harms to that autonomy, even in the absence of agreement about Fair Start.

The Fair Start certification program standards track capital itself, and forthcoming state attorney-general complaints, Lanham and other tort litigation – tied to climate loss and damage cases – will target relevant green/growth-washing claim, in many contexts. Because green/growth-washing comes from business, charities, media, politicians, academics, etc., all of whom are responding to capital. Much of that capital hides behind philanthropy, but the reality is that relative to the Children’s Convention and in light of climatological impacts on infants, the wealth doled out does less good than the harm created by the system of inequity and growth that created it.

These complaints will target harmful, preconstitutional, discourse: Statements about furthering particular values at a micro level without addressing them at a macro level, which has the effect of reinforcing a system that is fundamentally unjust and undoing the of the values we proclaim. Effective Altruism exemplifies this, assuming ownership in its very name of wealth taken from women and children.

An Open Letter to ReproAction and the Center for Reproductive Rights: Abortion Rights Can Override Governmental Authority

These relevant claims and omissions  – which have the unique effect of skewing the baseline for climate reparations by trillions of dollars – will have benefitted those making the statements at massive to cost to others, and in a way that now threatens millions of lives – those least responsible for the climate crisis.

To be clear: Rejecting family reforms like fair start means we are knowingly inflicting ecological and other harms on others, via the system that enriches us all at cost to those others.

TAKE ACTION: Contact Dr. Gay at cgay@gov.harvard.edu, and urge her 1) consider these questions as well as Humane Family reforms, and to 2) back changes in international law that would make Fair Start the first peremptory norm, such that it would authorize using extreme concentrations of wealth, the costs of which were externalized, to ensure children’s rights, the actual foundation of justice.

Lauren Boebert Is Wrong About Kids, and for Reasons Beyond the Liberal/Conservative Divide. She’s Preconstitutional.

Representative Lauren Boebert recently suggested, in a signal on abortion policy, that human babies might be also be considered an endangered species.

The comment – combined with an assessment of her policies more generally – shows that Boebert does not orient from a sufficiently just and reasonable position, and thus falls outside of the realm of reasonability necessary to be part of a social contract that is the basis of American freedom.

Two panels compare family planning types. Left: diverse family illustration with bright colors, labeled Fair Start family planning with positive points. Right: grayscale crowd in a city, labeled Economic growth-based family planning with negative points.

    Here are three reasons:

In other words, Boebert’s not constituting a just and free society because she is ignoring the necessary development of its members. She believes it’s ok for people you do not trust to have power over you, or she rejects the idea that governance and obligation to follow laws derives from the people.

Based on research verified in almost a dozen peer-reviews, there is no other outcome if you reject fairness in creation.

Free people will condition their obligation to follow the law and respect property rights on this change, and on being democratically empowered using a simple inversion test, because only these changes ensure they will not be impacted by others – through even subtle things like the climate crisis and bad parenting – against their will. The obligation to follow the law stems from systems being fair and free, and systems start with family policy.

Boebert is preconstitutional, promoting an fantasy world of freedom that ignores actual power relations, and their creation or constituting of their relations.

Take action: Urge Boebert here to adopt Fair Start modeling in her policies to correct all of this, and to be reasonable in a way that enables democracy, and the freedom it allows.

Nonprofits Are Ineffective Because They Silo Forms of Justice to Make Money. That Does Not Work.

It’s common to see nonprofits fundraising with pictures of sad dogs, hungry children, black people being disenfranchised, people dying in crackdowns on democracy by dictators, or polar ice melts in a climate crisis that is ravaging the world.

But does giving money to groups that silo – that focus on these individualized forms of justice – really make the world a better place? Not really. Usually nonprofits ignore the intersection that binds all forms of justice together – not what we could do – but who we could be.

That is the baseline for all justice, the one fundamental thing always present in and underlying all claims: People, and people who are disproportionally a product of the conditions in which they are born and develop. We cannot separate our values, like climate restoration, from who we should be. I’ve worked in well-known national nonprofits that made millions while knowingly undoing their work by choosing unjust policies – in what they thought were unrelated areas.

    Parent and child riding bikes

Current family policies ensure children are tortured to death by their own parents, more and more animals are subjected to suffering and slaughter, many other species are wiped out, the gap between rich and poor widens, children are robbed of their potential because we do not invest in them, and each person has less of a say in their political systems – turning town halls where many rule to shopping malls where few rule. These policies have created the political space for the reemergence of abortion and contraception bans, and enable influencers in media to openly push women to have more children to grow economies.

Ask anyone making claims of progress in creating a better world to tell the #wholetruth by disclosing their approach to families:

What are they doing to ensure all children in the world birth and development conditions consistent with the Children’s Rights Convention, like birth equity, backed by climate/biodiversity restoration?

Are they ensuring minimum levels of welfare for all kids, and equality of opportunity?

How are they ensuring all children born will have an effective voice in their democracies?

Chances are the person or organization making the claim is quietly undoing their progress by using an outdated approach to families, one that hurts kids, deepens inequity, destroys the environment, and makes sure the voice of most people does not matter in politics.

Four Key Questions for Nonprofits or Foundations You May Support

Solving the biggest problems we face, from the climate crisis to growing inequality, requires effective action. There is no way to be truly effective without planning ahead and adopting family planning policies that invest more in kids and restore nature. Here are some vital questions to ask groups you might be supporting:

    • If you support a child welfare organization: Does it urge communities and parents to ensure minimum levels of welfare for kids, before they are born, in order to avoid less effective interventions later in life?
    • If you support an environmental or animal protection organization: Does it promote sustainable families, by far the most effective way to ensure a healthy environment, biodiversity, and less animal suffering?
    • If you support social justice organizations working on racial, economic, gender, or other forms of equality: Do they promote family planning policies that a) level the playing field for all kids so that they truly have equal opportunities In life, and b) advance gender equity by eliminating all forms of pronatalism, or pushing people to have kids?
    • If you support organizations promoting human rights and democracy: Do they promote family planning policies that will ensure each person has an effective voice in their political systems and is not lost in the crowd?

In addition to considering organizations’ current approaches, find out how organizations have historically approached policies for how we should plan our families, and how those positions impacted social and ecological conditions in the world today.

Changing the way we all plan families is not easy. It requires breaking a taboo and confronting those who benefit from exploiting future generations and nature through unsustainable family planning policies. But there are lots of way to begin.

  • Fact Check Your Charities

    Fact Check Your Charities

    Don’t get scammed.

Fact check your charities to see if growth is undoing their progress. Nonprofits that claim to help children, animals, the environment, as well as human rights and democracy, are obligated to account for the impact of poor family planning and unsustainable population growth on their missions and strategic progress.

Many organizations are moving in the right direction of family reform. Why? Because the impact of family planning determines all progress. If charitable outcomes depend on people, they depend on family planning policies.

But not all charities are being truthful. Some ignore growth impacts because their funders rely on population-based economic systems, though that growth fundamentally created the climate crisis and is setting back success in moving towards sustainable development goals. Or funders often want to avoid paying to change family systems to give all kids a fair start in life, and instead choose to give their own children a massive head start in life. By evading the key or fundamental issue of growth, and forestalling policy reforms, many nonprofits helped exacerbate the climate crisis.

Many charities that make claims regarding helping children, animals, the environment, as well as furthering human rights and democracy, are seeing their progress undone by growth. More children are being born into horrible conditions than are being saved from them. More animals are dying from increased demand than are being liberated. And both our environment and our democracies are degrading because of that same growth.

Downstream measures do not offset this.

Infographic showing CO2 savings from various actions. Have one fewer child saves 58.6 tonnes per year, much more than others like living car-free (2.4), avoiding flights (1.6), recycling (0.21), and eating plant-based (0.82).

    Work upstream

Fair Start family reforms are the most just and effective way to protect children, animals and the environment. Join our Tell the Truth campaign urging corporations and charities to disclose their family policies, past and present, and the impact of those policies on things like inequity and the climate crisis.

This is the scam that created the crises: That the act of having children, the base “we” from which all our language proceeds, should be determined by top-down parental autonomy rather than bottom up, and future child-centric, justice. No other form of justice, or freedom, precedes this. That kind of justice – and the emancipatory freedom that comes with it – is existential, requiring minimum levels of welfare approaching birth equality (eliminating the black/white birth wealth gap), an effective voice in democracies where each voice matters, understanding efficiency as starting with maximizing each person’s capacity to flourish, and the restoration of the nonhuman world or nature.

It’s a lie that we are politically obligated to follow laws and to play fair – without having been created fairly. We can’t be created in that way until we de-appropriate the most vulnerable and numerous groups of entities: future generations and the nonhuman world. And that depends on how we plan families and have kids.

Infographic titled Better Family Planning, Simply Put with icons and three points: Delaying parenthood, smaller families, and community support, each explained with brief text and blue graphics.

    Act effectively

It’s time to apologize to younger generations and act effectively. How do we actually ensure an ecosocial fair start in life for every child? The science is clear: Equitable family entitlements that encourage delayed parenthood work. But instead of going forward into future generations – into women and children – wealth has historically gone into the hands of a few at the top, though there was easily enough wealth available to prevent the crises we are experiencing today.

Instead elites in each nation hid the complexity of power behind shell legal systems, never paying the full price of freedom. To make the change towards justice we will have to create enough demand to take the wealth back for women and children. We can’t solve problems without also empowering future generations to constitute as free and equal people.

This is not about population – it’s about initial and fundamental power relations. Help us bend the arc of who we become towards freedom and justice.
