For all of the reasons given above, many reasonable people would consider the young mother taking peaceful action to achieve birth equity for her future child, and setting an example that others might embrace to protect all future children the height of working towards freedom and justice. Free people will follow rules that start by limiting the influence others have over them. The process of her seeking birth equity would be, in that sense, liberating.

The Most Impactful Climate Action You Can Take? Get the Fair Start Reparations You and Your Children Are Owed.

The climate crisis is not just about emissions. It’s about how children, animals, and adults will actually experience the crisis, and that depends long run on the mental and physical resources they have, their location, those people that surround them, etc. And that depends on what they have at birth.

Impact, on many levels. depends on how we have kids.

The climate crisis, caused largely by generations of extreme wealth and wealthy families in colonizing nations, is actually threatening to kill untold numbers of children in poor families – those least responsible for the crisis.

A chart with circles of varying sizes showing the impact of different actions on reducing carbon emissions. The largest circle says “Have one fewer child 58.6”. Other actions include living car-free, recycling, and using green energy.

    Is that fair?

Would it be wrong for a young woman with little wealth or income intending to become a mother to demand birth equity resources – resources that simply ensure a level playing field for her child and thus offset the harm – from a wealthy family that externalized the deadly environmental and social costs of its wealth upon the child she wished to have? What if that family exploited that birth inequity and growth to not only harm her future child, but ensure that child would be likely to work for little money for the wealthy family and their children? What if the young woman were black, and whose child would have 9/10th less wealth than white kids because they would be black, and the white family she asked could afford to share by choosing to have fewer children?

What if the wealthy family had made their money by lying, greenwashing and otherwise hiding the true costs of their wealth?

What if the young intending mother were unable to even challenge the injustice of birth poverty and ecological injustice through participatory democracy where her voice actually mattered, because those systems never really represented the constituents they claimed to? What if she intended to use the resources she secured to engage in better way of planning for – and thriving in – families, one that left the racist ecocide and other mistakes of former generations behind?

A line graph compares median family wealth by age for White and Black Americans born 1943–51. White wealth is consistently much higher, peaking at $317,500 in their 60s, while Black wealth peaks at $54,800.

Consider this fact: People, not documents, constitute nations, and the creation of their power relations through birth and development – by definition and inevitably – determines whether they are relatively self-determining or determined by others. These relations are part of the implied “we” in every statement, the often-unspoken presence of the dominant political/legal system – usually the nation – from which the statement is orienting. How would you ever really account for inclusive power relations to allow a say in what the law should be without starting at creation, and accounting for the move from minor to adult that makes persons full citizens capable of making the rules.

You would not, and the failure to halt the climate crisis is evidence of this. And there is a clear formula to assess reparations. The would-be mother would be truly constituting democracy, speaking the truth and logic of self-determination to power.

Infographic comparing Top Down Power vs. Bottom Up Empowerment for birth equity, listing social impacts of each approach—including potential risks like legitimacywashing when using top-down strategies. Includes icons of people, scales, graduation cap, and supportive hands.

So . . . if that young mother were charged with trespassing in making the demand, could she challenge it – and expect a jury to side with her – because the state cannot limit access to property without first empowering (actually or physically constituting) its people to be involved in the making of such property rules, i.e. empowering them through just the sort of constitutive discourse in which she seeks to engage? How do we every get to governance by the people without elevating her pre-political right above the process-based rule of trespass? Do we really choose to constitute our relations via top-down force in a system run by men, versus a system of bottom-up empowerment run by women, via the act of care?

Her act is fundamentally liberating, and the best explanation of political obligation, because free people will start by limiting and decentralizing the influence others have over them.

This is not theoretical. A complaint reflecting the right to make such demands is now before the United Nations, to benefit the most vulnerable communities impacted by the crisis.

Free persons will not follow laws in systems that fundamentally disempower – that create lots of persons as cheap labor and consumers for shopping malls where they do not make the rules – rather investing much in developing them as citizens for town halls where they do.

Two panels compare family planning types. Left: diverse family illustration with bright colors, labeled Fair Start family planning with positive points. Right: grayscale crowd in a city, labeled Economic growth-based family planning with negative points.

For all of the reasons given above, many reasonable people would consider the young mother taking peaceful action to achieve birth equity for her future child, and setting an example that others might embrace to protect all future children the height of working towards freedom and justice.

There would be serious winds at her back, as a true total liberation protester:

    • The billions who would get a fair chance in life rather than be born, work for the wealthy, and die – all in poverty.

She would be ensuring self-determination for many, true freedom, instead of them being determined by others. What is the right way to deal with someone who insists on participating in a system that risks millions of lives in order for that person to make more money?

An infographic compares two options: on the left, gray figures under “People without real say over their government,” and on the right, colorful families with “Smaller & better democracies.” Text promotes smaller families for fairer representation.

She can leave the money with the wealthy family, knowing it was made at cost to others, or move it and save lives. She can empower children equally and help solve another problem: Acts of mass violence do not stem from mental illness as much as from a sense of disempowerment, and the need to matter in one final act within what shooters perceive as an unjust world. We were sold sustainable town halls where we matter and can control the world around us to a degree, but got unsustainable, massive shopping malls where most do not matter and have no say. And those that benefitted from this system, at cost to others, want to block media from reporting things like mass shootings to hide the costs of their systems.

The young woman’s move would start to reverse that. While coercion would be counterproductive, she would have better justification for it than the state. If we are really self-determining and politically equal, that means we are invested in and empowered enough to offset each other’s capacity for self-determination equally as nations grow, so that each person can influence the rules under which they have to live and be free enough to look into each other’s eyes without fear or deference.

Those on whom she would make the demands – who would choose preventable deaths – seem tiny and worthy of targeting relative to all of that. Her move to demand is a move towards knowing her and many other children, under a test laid out by one of the leading political philosophers in the world, will live free.

Do you support an academic institution? Most of the academics in debates about family reforms contradict in their writings the basic values they exhibited throughout their lives, e.g. seeking minimum thresholds of personal welfare, expecting equal access to opportunities, participating in and adherence to political/legal systems that purported to represent the governed, use and enjoyment of an environment relatively conducive to human and nonhuman health, etc.

Given their privileged intergenerational positionality, and the fact that they sent their lives generally relying on and participated in legal/political systems of coercive obligation that benefitted them at cost to others, they should at least begin from a default or provisional position of extending those values to future generations by saying – as a fundamental premise of justice over top-down power – that basic human rights systems should prioritize the child welfare/equity in instruments like the Children’s Rights Convention over parental subjective choice in the ethics, law and policy of family planning, population, and procreation so that future generations can also debate these things from the comfort and security these academics do. Urge any academic institution you support to back Fair Start family reforms.

Don’t get scammed: The Climate Crisis Means the Growth Charities Ignored Has Now Undone Many of the Benefits They Claimed to Create. Take Action.

The wealthiest and the charities they fund want to pretend the world was always meant to look like a massive shopping mall, and that climate damages should be evaluated on that basis. The truth is human rights guaranteed functional town halls in biodiverse nature. That is what was lost. That is how we measure the harm.

While charities were touting the benefits of saving a particular forest, ending certain diseases, or enlarging cages for laying hens, they were also ignoring the growth-based economic systems that were enriching their largest billionaire funders. Those same growth-based systems have undone three quarters of the climate crisis mitigation attempts made over the last several years.

That growth, from which these charities and their funders profited, now threatens millions of lives. That growth will cause more animal suffering and ecocide than many of the myopic, window-dressing campaigns these organizations ran and used for fundraising actually prevented.

By Intentionally Ignoring Growth and Inequity Nonprofits, Media and Business Leaders Created a Fantasy World of Progress That Prevented Real Climate Reforms, and Will Kill Millions

Now those same funders and their charities are trying to evade liability for the harm they caused by skewing the baseline for climate reparations, and ignoring the most fundamental human right – the right to a fair start in life, and climate restoration via birth equity.

The wealthiest and the charities want to pretend the world was always meant to look like a massive shopping mall, and that climate damages should be evaluated on that basis. The truth is human rights guaranteed functional town halls in biodiverse nature. That is what was lost. That is how we measure the harm.

They are instead using their wealth to create a fake crisis, with Elon Musk – the poster child for an unfair start in life – funding the idea of underpopulation as the real threat to all. Women are not breeding enough consumers and cheap labor for his factories.

But if the basic condition for any rule is that it be fair, and the first rule is that which accounts for our creation and development, e.g. the right of parents to freely have kids, then that rule must be made fair. And fairness begins with all children’s rights to a restored climate and ecosocial birth equity – true relative self-determination.

That is the fundamental baseline for climate compensation and for greenwashing, humane washing, and rights washing – which gears off the most vulnerable, whose interests are aligned against the wealthiest. How can there be any human rights when we start everything, we do with a creation norm that does nothing to protect the most vulnerable? The system that allowed this child to be tortured to death, three-quarters of climate mitigation to fail. or the demand for animal products to soon double, is based on coercive power relation protecting and producing the cost-externalized wealth of a handful of persons. All of that could have been avoided had we used that wealth to entitle parental readiness and a long-run goal of nations taking seriously the self-determination of its citizens, demonstrated by the constant capacity to break into functional constitutional conventions. Instead that handful of persons chose unsustainable economic growth that created billions of disenfranchised citizens who – through decades of bad family policy – were treated more like a conveyor belt of consumers, cheap labor and uneducated taxpayers than influential members of a democracy with a vested interest in the nation.

And we need not wait for governments to recognize and fix the issue. Many are using the correct baseline to cover effective reparations already.

    Climate crisis infographic

Why don’t we have to wait?

Free people will condition compliance with the law on their being fundamentally empowered by it, and that’s physically impossible without treating an ecosicial fair start in life as the first and overriding human right, a right that includes actual participation in governance – being created for town halls, not shopping malls. Governments cannot assign property rights – to Musk or others – without first ensuring the human rights that justify governmental authority.

Today’s freedom fighters move beyond the outdated idea of national borders and fight for fundamentally liberating family policies that free us all ensuring climate and biodiversity restoration through birth equity entitlements that ensure parenting delay, a level playing field for all kids, and smaller or more eco-centric families.

That leads to the freedom political theorists have envisioned, but never realized because they were focused on how we should act rather than who we should be.

Don’t Get Scammed: Climate Justice Means Taking What Your Children Deserve from the Men Who Harmed Them

There is a truth many are hiding via greenwashing and other moves, to avoid or reduce climate liability: The obligation to pay just and effective Fair Start family reparations.

Fact: Had we based family planning on what children need rather than economic growth models, we would not need to pay the climate reparations we now owe, for things like grave harm to mothers and infants, payments which will never go far enough. As early as 1974 family planning should have been determined by the presence of resources to assure ecosocial birth equity and a stable ecocentric climate, treated as the first human right/objective norm.

Urge Peter Singer to Tell the Truth about Animal Liberation, and Save Lives Infographic

The portion of wealth made at cost to this baseline is subject to that use now as the most effective form of climate reparations today, and many are leading by example, paying those costs to families to avoid million dying as temperatures rise. Government cannot assign wealth until they fulfill fair start obligations, the obligation that justifies their authority. Why? Law is a unique obligation because it can be coerced. After the Enlightenment and the development of democracy, that is so because we assume law represents the will of the governed. Logically then, the first obligation is to have and raise children in a way that actually makes that true.

And things like growth, and birth inequity, impact that truth – with crowding drowning out the influence of average persons, and making impact on what the law is mostly contingent on wealth.

Some will say this is not their issue. How can one’s fundamental role in political systems not be their issue? What they really mean is that they accept fundamental status quo where they benefit at cost to others.

World Population vs. Global Anthropogenic CO2 Emissions

We caused harm by using family policy to quietly convert public progress into private benefits, and must pay now, compensate the harmed and be free of that obligation. Some of those who benefited the most from not giving what they should have in the past are covering those reparations, via effective programs like Seeds, using hard metrics like the Children’s Rights Convention, climate restoration via birth equity, and Tucker/Dasgupta’s optimality.

These entitlements ensure parenting delay, readiness, reallocation of entitlements for birth and rearing equity, and smaller or ecocentric families that raise influential citizens – not economic inputs with little say over the rules under the rules they must live. We are not bound by written constitutions, but whatever justly constitutes our power relations to make those relations consensual, which comes very close to the ideal of decolonization, ensuring at the same time the protection of the most vulnerable: Future children and nonhumans.

How Do You Destroy a Planet's Atmosphere? Tell Lies. Fair Start Certification Tells the Truth Infographic

If freedom always requires some level of self-determination, it would be impossible to ensure any version of it without birth and development conditions for all children that meet minimum thresholds so they can self-determine rather than be determined (e.g., climatologically) by others, and one test for whether that is occurring equitably would be treating growth as inverse to self-determination, relative to the absence of human power/nature (which requires, at a minimum, climate restoration). This formula leads to a free and equal future – Tucker/Dasgupta’s optimality.

Who we should be, via children’s rights, logically always comes first – and sets an overriding baseline for all cost and benefit analysis, including climate reparations. One’s positionality, intergenerational and otherwise, is key in this analysis. Money often controls how one sees this work.

    Be effective.

Take Action: Find and “pull” high profile levers to be effective family role models by paying what they owe, and bend the arc of who we are becoming towards justice. How? Start by asking public figures claiming to do good in the world to actually tell the truth. Ask them to account for how the family norms, policies and relative ranking of obligations they never accounted for has undone those values and created the climate crisis and vast inequity.

We can all intervene and disrupt the scam of hiding injustice behind families, and the green/growth-washing nonprofits, companies, foundations, etc. engage in every day causing deadly harm to at-risk victims in nations around the world. We can demand the costs that the wealthy extolled on future generations in the form of birth and development reparations, the intervention that does the most good for the most vulnerable, ensuring existential justice / relative self-determination.

Contrary to current family policies, Fair Start family norms, policies and interventions1) use international human rights law, not purely domestic standards, which is required for a climate crisis that does not observe national borders – but does so in a way that includes domestic remedies, 2) sets the highest standard for climate reparations rather than undercutting victims’ claims by pretending anthropocentric standards are the only standards, 3) mandates direct family-based reparations, which have the greatest impact and sidestep the governments that created the crisis , and 4) corrects the baseline error or fallacy of using systems of governance that don’t require first empowering their constituents through family reforms.

  • The fundamental problem driving the climate crisis and inequity, and the solution.

The fundamental problem driving the climate crisis and inequity, and the solution.

Almost all talk of climate and inequity ignores family policy. Ask the questions that bring out the basic truth, and identifies who – fundamentally – owes what.

    Problem

Many companies, politicians, nonprofits, media and academics have been knowingly undoing the climate and other forms of progress they were claiming by quietly choosing unsustainable, growth-based and inequitable family policies from which they quietly benefitted at deadly cost to others.

Exploitative growth policies have now put the planet and millions of lives in peril. The climate and inequity crises we face today were caused, fundamentally, because as we described in a recent Newsweek op-ed, world leaders did not ensure every child an ecosocial fair start in life as required by the Children’s Rights Convention.

Their lies about or progress created a fantasy world of change that ensured the climate crisis. Those same backwards family policies – hidden by greenwashing – are now putting millions of lives at risk.

World Population vs. Global Anthropogenic CO2 Emissions

Many, in the face of the climate and inequity crises threatening so many lives, are pushing women to have more kids in order to profit from the growth it would create.

They are doing so with no minimum safeguards for the would-be mothers, or their children.

Don't Get Scammed: Charities, Media and Big Business Use Family Policy to Quietly Undo Progress. Ask This One Question Before Giving, Believing, or Buying Infographic

    Solution

Require disclosure of past, present, and future family policies. Break the fantasy.

Ask anyone claiming to do any form of good, whether they are conservative, liberal or otherwise inclined, how they have accounted for children being born into the world, and whether they are investing in those children to give them a fair start, or exploiting them for growth. Do they support family planning entitlements that ensure parental delay and readiness, relocation, leveling the playing field for all kids, and smaller or more ecocentric families? Or are they putting millions of innocent lives at risk?

If they are not working towards climate restoration via a human right to birth equity and development, they are doing more harm than good.

By knowing the truth, we can move from a paradigm of family planning where would-be parents just randomly have kids to one where they are able to plan based on the incentivizing availability of resources that would give their kids an ecosocial fair start in life. We can take the money some made on a system that created lots of people for shopping malls and use it to fund a system that invests in kids to empower them in democratic town halls.

Two illustrations compare family planning models: At left, a diverse happy family stands together with icons for community and health. At right, a monochrome crowd in a city. Text contrasts fair start (rights-based) with economic growth-based planning.

Those blocking this change operate from a false premise, and a misunderstanding of freedom. Any obligation to follow the law – including respecting  property entitlements – is contingent on the basic limitation and decentralization of power, which has to start with being empowered to control the law and obligation in the way we are created and reared. The first obligation has to do with our creation, not our behavior, and is based on child ecosocial equity, not procreative autonomy. That means first moving towards hard metrics for inclusive democracy, biodiversity and climate restoration via an ecosocial human right to birth equity and development.

We can get there through a simple discourse around resources, or the physical constituting of just communities, the sort of cooperative family planning that can create the equitable power relations that must precede legitimate constitutions. If we take the idea of freedom or self-determination seriously, it has to occur primarily if not exclusively through the ecosocial conditions in which we are born and raised – through things like what the Children’s Convention promises.

Free people will recognize their obligations to such a mutually empowering system – true human rights – as overriding obligations to downstream or more traditional legal/political systems that do not derive all the way back.

An Open Letter to ReproAction and the Center for Reproductive Rights: Abortion Rights Can Override Governmental Authority

Family planning, for decades, should have been determined by the incentivizing presence of ecosocial birth equity resources.

Instead – according to one Nobel laureate – that wealth went to the top and created the climate crisis and vast inequity. Those continuing that system are skewing the baseline for climate reparations, benefitting themselves at cost to others, and putting millions of lives at risk.

Urging them to tell the truth and change course will save those lives. And It is better to use things like voluntary climate reparations and other just entitlement systems to fund equity, than to react to disempowerment in violent ways, the way some have and will, targeting innocent victims rather than those who actually benefited from the disempowerment.
