Children’s Rights Must Not Be Overlooked

A Voice From Mwesigye Robert, Zahara Nabakoza , Esther Afolaranmi and Betty Martin-Finneran.

The voices from Africa, and of black communities in the United States, are rising against the fundamentally illegal standards that violate children’s rights in poor regions and recognize the value of using rich children in exploiting poor children.

Children’s Rights Must Not Be Overlooked.

Rejoice Africa Foundation, on behalf of a coalition of organizations, groups, and movements and voiceless from afflicted communities from Africa and India is calling on many United States attorneys generals – under their international law obligations – to reorient the business model in the Coke/Fairlife litigation that treated children of color as deserving exponentially less than white children and hid the harm it was causing them.

That model is costing millions of lives and trillions of dollars.

This violated human rights laws and is equity fraud – it’s using the same fundamentally fraudulent metrics that caused the climate crisis to evade liability for it. This was the biggest cause of the case’s harm, and using that standard did more harm than good.

It harmed the work of Rejoice Africa Foundation  using the Afrocentric model of decentralizing human power and freedom, treating all children as deserving rights, making wealth and governance condition their entitlements and authority on empowering each person.

We championed call for action and reconsideration of the rights of vulnerable children, not ensuring children’s birthrights and instead exploiting inequitable growth did more harm to all of our values than we did to further them. But we still see a troubling imbalance while animal rights gain global attention, yet millions of children suffer in silence and remain neglected. Through our Tell the Truth Campaign, we urge you to acknowledge this injustice and take action.

Children from marginalized communities face poverty, diseases, exploitation, and climate-driven hardship.

They deserve the same level of compassion and advocacy as animals.

Join us in telling the truth: children’s rights must not be overlooked. Let’s work together to create a world where every child has the dignity, protection, health, climate change , food security, and other basic needs they deserve in life.

In an upcoming Tell the Truth campaign filing before the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, we will allege U.S. companies and charities are using an illegal standard to define words like “sustainable” and “liberty” benchmarked to enrich the white children of wealthy families here, rather than be truly sustainable and liberating for all children, especially those in Amboseli. The standard is illegal because it allows the use of those terms for practices that violate child welfare, environmental, civil rights, and the law of democracy.

Two panels compare family planning types. Left: diverse family illustration with bright colors, labeled Fair Start family planning with positive points. Right: grayscale crowd in a city, labeled Economic growth-based family planning with negative points.

Coke/fair was used on manufactured numbers to get to particular targeted results that are illegal, and we have testimony in Affidavit before the African Union it’s done elsewhere and it’s common but it’s not easy to challenge because also government and companies are busy making these numbers to benefit but people and animals are losing this in the system enriched them to an unsustainable which caused inequality, injustices and emotions. The assessment of equality, humane and ecosystem of the harm was based on high numbers and false pledges.

Victims are suffering from a climate crisis that was not caused as a result of wealthy people hiding from the truth that deepens the vulnerability.

Severe climate related issues that disrupt ecosystems, economies and livelihood. These shocks can be caused by extreme weather changes such as droughts, floods and heat waves which often lead to devastating consequences like food insecurity, displacement, diseases, injustices and poverty.

Vulnerable communities like the global south, climate shock worsen food insecurity, malnutrition and poverty. These impacts are often intensified by global factors including emissions and unsustainable practices from the global north that contribute to harsh climatic changes. The hardships are seen through erratic rainfall, prolonged droughts, diseases and poverty. Global north companies continue to concentrate on wealthy accumulation through doing business that pollutes the environment of innocent people and are affected more compared to the wealthy people.

Informational flyer shows statistics about the benefits of family planning, emphasizing reduced climate impact, lower extinction rates, financial returns, and improved women’s education. The flyer promotes child-first family planning.

Harsh climate change impacts the global south causing devastating losses of homes, livelihood and cultural heritage. Many victims face relentless disasters with little support and hence resort to self-denial as a coping mechanism. Reducing emotions becomes a survival strategy in the situation of unacknowledged suffering, systemic neglect and overwhelming reality of an uncertain future. This emotional challenge cannot be bearable therefore victims have heard enough silent cry for justice, equality and urgent climate action but voices have been undermined or not heard because of the top line system.

This self-denial has fueled deep anger among global south victims who bear the brunt of the crisis did not create.

Displacement, food insecurity, diseases and poverty intensifies the frustration especially as the global north continues unsustainable practices with minimal accountability. This anger is not personal, it is a collective, directed at systemic injustices, broken/empty pledges and the failure of global leaders / United Nations to act decisively. Therefore it is a powerful selfless force driving climate activism in demanding reparations while pushing for urgent equitable solutions using Fair Start Movement standards.

Faced with harsh realities of climate changes, few victims in the global south are starting negotiations/bargaining. Victims seek global north to invert, accept climate error, policy change and act as obligations. This emotional response based on victims attempting to secure survival in an unjust system without meaning global actions and fear negotiations remain one sided leaving victims  continue struggling for the solutions in the crisis not created by victims.

A growing threat loomed based on plastic pollution where used bottles from Coca-Cola poorly disposed of into the environment and acted as vector hiding breeding areas for mosquitoes and children were sick of malaria and some died of malaria. Then garbage was full of plastic bottles and then washed away by rain into the water sources near and ended affecting aquatic animals like fish, also reduced the volume of water sources and contributed to water contamination.

Climate had also grown unpredictable, Rainfall patterns shifted causing prolonged droughts that wilted the once flourishing kitchen gardens and women struggled to water vegetables in the kitchen gardens but the plastic waste bottles reduced the volume of water and leading to the drying up of near water sources then women had to fetch water for irrigation from long distance 1 kilometer and this reduced the yield of vegetables from kitchen gardens.

And also this drought affected animals. Domestic animals that feed on grass and shrubs and also on water animals could go long distances looking for water and grass, and some animals could die of hunger and water scarcity.

Don’t Get Scammed: Is Your Charity Going Backwards?

The climate crisis exposes a fundamental problem in public interest work: how can a system that perpetuates inequality and environmental destruction be truly in the public interest? Millions will die from heat waves, yet many charities and funders claim to be helping while reinforcing the very structures causing the crisis.

The Root of the Problem: Inequitable Growth

Wealthy families, who initially funded public interest work, did not ensure their wealth reflected actual value relative to an objective standard, such as a healthy climate. Instead, they manipulated demand through poor family planning, creating an artificial audience and perpetuating low educational standards. This system violated children’s rights, treating people as economic inputs rather than citizens. The result? A cycle of inequity that diluted democratic influence, ensuring the continuation of a system destined to fail.

By using anthropocentric standards to define sustainability, these funders ensured benefits for their own investments and children rather than addressing the rights of the most vulnerable, such as those in Uganda. Their sleight of hand privatized power, treating democracy as an abstract concept rather than an equitable political relationship.

A split infographic compares Current Family Planning with Fair Start Family Planning, listing differences in welfare, equality, and environmental protection for children, while highlighting how practices like legitimacywashing can undermine genuine progress.

    Exposing the Charitable Fraud

Wealthy donors and activists alike contributed to this crisis by prioritizing profit and convenience over fundamental change. Activists often ignored their own obligations to empower future generations, while fundraisers urged compliance with deceptive narratives to secure funding. Many charities focused on surface-level solutions, avoiding deeper accountability.

The crisis we face stems from a fundamental truth: you cannot achieve justice from a foundation of injustice.

The Systematic Failure of Reproductive Justice

After 1948, world leaders privatized freedom by conflating the decision to have children with general autonomy, rather than ensuring political equity for the child. This resulted in standards that systematically devalued children of color and perpetuated inequity. Leaders also defined power solely as state violence, rather than broader human influence. Consequently, people today face climate catastrophe with no real influence over policy while struggling to survive heat waves.

Family law was used to systematically undo civil rights progress by detaching individuals from the context of their birth and development. If public interest organizations were to account for how children enter the world, they would expose this continuous undoing of rights.

The Fair Start Movement: Holding Charities Accountable

The Fair Start Movement works to expose those responsible for this crisis. Many charities and institutions hide their complicity through fraudulent impact assessments that ignore positionality and birth context. They obscure the reality that reproductive rights systems assume children of color are worth less, leading to deadly consequences as the climate crisis escalates.

Fair Start activists previously contributed to a fantasy world of “positive impact,” such as promoting vegan brands, without accounting for the real conditions children are born into. This illusion allowed democratic relationships to erode into commercial exploitation.

Challenging assumptions that hurt our future infographic

    How We Expose the Truth

Through the Tell the Truth and Act Campaign, we urge organizations to acknowledge that their work is undone daily as children are born into inequitable conditions. Violating children’s fundamental rights has done more harm to missions than any progress these organizations claim to have made.

    We demand:

    • Transparency about the systemic failure of family entitlements that undermined civil rights movements.
    • Contextualized impact assessments with neutral fact-checking
    • Disclosure of how much good was undone by inequity, ecological degradation, and political disenfranchisement.

If organizations genuinely value the causes they claim to support (e.g., biodiversity, animal welfare), they must take responsibility for past harm and contribute to equitable solutions. Otherwise, they are frauds who benefited at deadly cost to others and deserve no protection themselves.

    Legal Accountability and Reparations

Those who profited at the expense of future generations can be held legally accountable.

  • Urging Support for Political Equity in Birth and Development as a Fundamental Human Right

Urging Support for Political Equity in Birth and Development as a Fundamental Human Right

    The Issue at Hand

Fair Start formed in response to widespread use of an illegal assessment and reporting standard by U.S. companies, nonprofits, media, and universities. This standard evades compliance with the Children’s Rights Convention and conceals climate damage liability. Rooted in outdated and unjust metrics, it has fueled the climate crisis and led to millions of deaths.

Instead of ensuring justice at birth and political equity, this system relies on arbitrary measures of social justice. We can change that by asking key questions:

    • “How do you account for children’s rights when assessing your organization’s impact?”
    • “Are your claims based on the same flawed standards that contributed to the climate crisis?”

Justice begins with fair conditions at birth and development. We must shift from after-the-fact remedies to proactive, structural change.

A split infographic compares Current Family Planning with Fair Start Family Planning, listing differences in welfare, equality, and environmental protection for children, while highlighting how practices like legitimacywashing can undermine genuine progress.

    The Roots of the Problem

Decades ago, world leaders removed political equity from reproductive rights, reinforcing “separate but equal” family standards. This led to unjust and unsustainable birth conditions, favoring economic growth over equity. The result? Disproportionate climate risk and political disenfranchisement, particularly for marginalized children.

Rather than investing in equitable birth and development, wealth was concentrated in privileged families, worsening inequality. Charitable efforts have often done more to enrich donors than to solve systemic issues.

The Consequences of Ignoring Political Equity

By ignoring fair power distribution at birth, social justice efforts have been performative rather than transformative. This has allowed:

    • Political and economic systems to continue favoring privileged groups.
    • Climate crisis impacts to disproportionately harm vulnerable communities.
    • Social justice philanthropy to obscure its failures rather than address them.

The current system scores children of color as deserving fewer resources and more risk, worsening climate-related deaths. Any organization avoiding this reality is complicit in deepening inequity.

Challenging assumptions that hurt our future infographic

The Need for a Fair Start Standard

All legal obligations should stem from a foundation that prioritizes children’s rights and political equity at birth. True justice must:

    1. Ensure children are born into conditions that fulfill their rights.
    2. Address environmental sustainability alongside political representation.
    3. Shift funding and policy priorities toward early-childhood equity.

    Steps Toward Change

    1. Recognize Fair Start as a Preemptive Standard
      • Reparations should focus on ensuring small, equitable, and democratic family structures.
      • Organizations should acknowledge past failures and commit to a new standard of legitimacy.
    2. Expose High-Profile Barriers to Equity
      • Identify individuals and institutions benefiting from inequitable systems.
      • Challenge philanthropists and corporations to disclose how their wealth affects children’s rights.
    3. Launch the Fair Start “Tell the Truth” Campaign
      • Replace misleading impact claims with truthful assessments of harm and injustice.
      • Hold organizations accountable for their role in perpetuating inequity.

    The Bottom Line

Political legitimacy starts at birth. Justice requires ensuring that no child is born into conditions of deprivation and disempowerment. This is not an optional intervention—it is the foundation of a fair and sustainable future.

We must stop supporting unjust systems and demand accountability. Will you join us in advocating for a truly equitable start in life for all children?

  • Artificial Intelligence Can Do Basic Political Math.

Artificial Intelligence Can Do Basic Political Math.

According to a ChatGPT chat on February 7, 2025:

Population growth has significant implications for political equity, vote dilution, and political representation, particularly in democratic systems. Here’s how:

    1. Political Equity
    • As populations grow, ensuring fair representation becomes more challenging. In rapidly growing areas, political districts may become imbalanced, leading to underrepresentation.
    • Resources, infrastructure, and government services may not keep pace with population increases, disproportionately affecting marginalized communities.
    1. Vote Dilution
    • Vote dilution occurs when the voting power of individuals or groups is weakened, often due to redistricting or changes in population density.
    • If districts are not redrawn regularly to reflect population shifts, some areas may become overrepresented while others become underrepresented.
    • In some cases, intentional gerrymandering can exacerbate vote dilution by manipulating district boundaries to favor one political party or demographic group over another.
    1. Political Representation
    • Legislative bodies often have fixed numbers of seats, meaning fast-growing areas may be underrepresented until district lines are redrawn.
    • Minority and marginalized groups may struggle to maintain proportional representation if population growth skews the balance of political power.
    • At the national level, states with slower population growth may lose influence in bodies like the U.S. House of Representatives, which is based on population size.

A split infographic compares Current Family Planning with Fair Start Family Planning, listing differences in welfare, equality, and environmental protection for children, while highlighting how practices like legitimacywashing can undermine genuine progress.

    Potential Solutions

    • Redistricting reforms: Ensuring fair and regular redistricting based on updated census data can help maintain political equity.
    • Proportional representation: Systems that allocate seats based on vote share rather than winner-takes-all districts can reduce vote dilution.
    • Increased legislative representation: Expanding legislative bodies (such as adding seats to Congress) could help accommodate growing populations more fairly.

Fair Start Movement is Exposing Reparations Fraud and Hidden Climate Crisis Liability

(The following discusses legal and political theory. For a simpler read, see: Family Planning Offers the Best Means for Combating Climate Change: An Interview with Carter Dillard, Fair Start Movement (mahb.stanford.edu))

    The Problem: A Broken System

For decades, children’s right to a fair start in life has been ignored. The world has prioritized economic growth over sustainability, leading to environmental destruction, political inequity, and the loss of fundamental freedoms. Many children, especially those of color, are born into conditions with fewer resources and greater risks. This systemic failure has harmed our shared values—like access to clean air, water, and food—more than any social or environmental efforts have helped.

The Root Cause: Growth Over Justice

Unchecked population growth, combined with political disenfranchisement, has weakened societies’ ability to address climate change and social justice issues. Wealthy elites, including corporate and philanthropic leaders, have avoided responsibility for the crisis by focusing on surface-level reforms while ignoring the root issue: fair and sustainable birth and development conditions.

Despite claims of reducing carbon emissions, many environmental organizations operate in high-emission nations where total emissions and negative birth outcomes continue to rise. The supposed progress is undone by the very systems of inequality that these organizations fail to challenge. Children and animals are left in increasingly dire conditions, without the political power or resources to escape harm.

The Fair Start Movement: A Constitutional Watchdog

The Fair Start Movement is the first global initiative focused on exposing the hidden standards that perpetuate environmental and social injustices. We investigate claims made by influential organizations, comparing their reported impact to objective measures of political equity and sustainability. Our goal is to shift the conversation from downstream interventions to upstream solutions—starting with fair starts for all children.

A split infographic compares Current Family Planning with Fair Start Family Planning, listing differences in welfare, equality, and environmental protection for children, while highlighting how practices like legitimacywashing can undermine genuine progress.

Holding Power Accountable: The “Tell The Truth” Campaign

Through our Tell The Truth campaign, we ask key influencers a simple question: How much of the good you claim to do is undone by ignoring birth inequity and its impact on political power?

By pressuring organizations and funders to disclose their true impact—including the harm caused by ignoring children’s rights—we push for real accountability. If they are willing to acknowledge the truth, we urge them to redirect resources toward ensuring all children are born into fair conditions, setting a foundation for a just and sustainable world.

The Stakes: Who Pays the Price?

For years, major contributors to climate change—like Coca-Cola and Exxon—have profited while shifting the burden of their destruction onto vulnerable communities. Black and brown children in the U.S. and worldwide bear the brunt of these injustices, treated as though basic rights are a privilege rather than a guarantee.

The consequences are visible: hurricanes devastating the southeastern U.S., wildfires ravaging California, and the increasing struggle of unhoused populations. These crises are not accidental; they result from a system designed to protect wealth at the expense of justice.

Challenging assumptions that hurt our future infographic

A Call to Action: Rethinking Justice

True justice starts at birth. If we continue to ignore how children enter the world—born into vastly unequal conditions with no say in their fate—then all other social justice efforts remain incomplete.

The Fair Start Movement challenges traditional power structures by focusing on fundamental rights:

    • Political Equity: Ensuring all children have an equal share in democracy.
    • Sustainable Growth: Holding corporations and governments accountable for environmental destruction.
    • Truthful Impact Reporting: Exposing fraudulent claims that hide systemic injustices.

We invite organizations and individuals to rethink their approach. Instead of using abstract measures of success, we must ask: Are we actually improving lives, or are we perpetuating harm?

    Join Us in Demanding Accountability

The future depends on breaking the cycle of injustice. We call on all advocates, organizations, and policymakers to recognize the real drivers of climate and social crises—and to act on solutions that start where justice truly begins: at birth.

  • Six Truths About Freedom You Didn’t Know.

Six Truths About Freedom You Didn’t Know.

Freedom from the power of others begins with rights, and the most fundamental right is not about how we act, but how we are created. Children’s birthrights determine whether they are empowered by the conditions in which they are born and raised and define their level of influence relative to others. Freedom is not defined by artificial borders on a map but by the true boundaries of self-determination—who controls the world we must share. Freedom is compromised when people fear their fellow citizens, lack real influence over political representatives, suffer from human-induced climate crises, are denied access to nature, or are economically controlled by employers.

    The First Obligation: Future Generations

Our primary obligations are not to constitutions, governments, or the wealthy, but to future generations—children whose empowerment gives legitimacy to those institutions. That means prioritizing funding for responsible family planning, ensuring that every child is born into conditions that allow them to offset their fundamental political influence equally. Those who reject these obligations deny justice to future generations and should be held accountable for reparations fraud. How else should we address a system that makes some children billionaires while others suffer and die?

A split infographic compares Current Family Planning with Fair Start Family Planning, listing differences in welfare, equality, and environmental protection for children, while highlighting how practices like legitimacywashing can undermine genuine progress.

    Legal Responsibility and Accountability

Do existing fraud laws address this injustice? Laws must be interpreted in ways that legitimize their authority. The legal areas needed to advance Fair Start reforms—constitutional law, fraud prevention, consumer protection, child welfare, environmental law, nationality, democracy, and civil rights—must be applied to ensure true inclusion and representation. Governments and the wealthy cannot evade liability by writing self-serving laws. Treaties such as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights must be enforced by the ultimate authority: the people.

    The Power of Language

How do we drive this change? Language matters. True freedom is impossible without honest communication about how we become legally obligated to others as they enter the world. If we are to be truly self-determining, we must communicate in ways that reflect our obligations to future generations. How can we claim to uphold fundamental rights without ensuring that children are born into conditions that respect those rights? Those who have benefited from past injustices should redirect their resources to ensure fair starts in life for all children—the most just and effective solution to today’s crises.

The Myth of Philanthropy and Social Justice

Neither business nor government has historically defined social justice ideals—wealthy philanthropists have. By framing reproductive autonomy in a way that isolates women, ignores child equity, and promotes unsustainable growth, they created a false reference point for self-determination. This distortion has fueled a climate crisis that has killed millions of children of color while enriching privileged families.

This false narrative removed freedom from its measurable share in democracy, converting it into wealth. The illusion of progress has upheld a system that benefits white children at the expense of marginalized communities, undermining civil rights and anti-apartheid movements. If the Three-Fifths Compromise in U.S. history devalued Black lives, today’s generational wealth disparities—violating enforceable children’s rights—are now causing the deaths of millions in a climate crisis driven primarily by white wealth.

Challenging assumptions that hurt our future infographic

A Path Forward: Fair Start Entitlements

We can secure children’s rights through parenting delay payments, structured inversely to wealth and income. Given the systemic injustices at play, the right to access wealth for these entitlements supersedes current ownership claims—especially since much of this wealth was built through unsustainable growth and externalized costs that violated children’s birthrights.

    The Broken Foundation Analogy

Imagine society as a crumbling floor. Some individuals—those born into privilege—insist on continuing as usual, benefiting from an arbitrary birth lottery while others fall through, dragging many down with them. By refusing to rebuild this foundation, these free riders endanger us all.

True self-determination requires that we ask fundamental questions about how we ensure each new generation is empowered equitably. Without a just system of creation and development, new generations are either disempowered or impose unchecked power over others—worsening environmental destruction and social inequality. If we truly seek freedom, we must start by ensuring every child is given an equal and fair start in life.

  • Are Philanthropists Conditioning Funding?

    Are Philanthropists Conditioning Funding?

As liability overtakes charity as the primary model for wealth redistribution, we must confront the reality of the philanthroscam. Wealthy funders have positioned themselves as saviors while benefiting from inequitable economic growth that has enriched their own children at the deadly expense of others. Nonprofit leaders, too, have played into this scheme, omitting key details in their reporting that would reveal how this growth has undone their purported progress.

This omission has hidden the largest factor driving the climate crisis: the systemic violation of children’s legal rights.

A split infographic compares Current Family Planning with Fair Start Family Planning, listing differences in welfare, equality, and environmental protection for children, while highlighting how practices like legitimacywashing can undermine genuine progress.

Wealthy families from nations most responsible for the climate crisis are funding a false narrative to evade liability for their role in perpetuating environmental and social injustices. They employ an equity fraud model, sidestepping accountability for climate reparations. These families support decoy nonprofits that compartmentalize social justice issues into downstream concerns, diverting attention from the structural entitlement and reparations fraud occurring upstream. This deceit allows them to benefit from a system that ultimately reverses the progress they claim to make. The result: privileged children of funders continue to prosper while countless children of color bear the devastating consequences.

Many philanthropic foundations that support sexual health and reproductive rights have profited more from the consumer demand created by population growth than they have invested in contraceptive access and health interventions. This strategy undermines democratic institutions by prioritizing economic growth over birth equity, possibly as a way to protect generational wealth entitlements.

    The Contradiction of Reproductive Autonomy

Many funders in the population space refuse to question the UN’s contradictory stance on reproductive autonomy because doing so would expose the nepotistic foundations at the core of their own institutions. Shifting the conversation away from “population” and toward the fundamental right of individuals to self-determine power relations through birth, development, and emancipation would challenge their existing frameworks and economic interests.

Former employees of the Fair Start Movement have witnessed how key facts were deliberately omitted in previous roles to maintain a false sense of progress in social justice and environmental sustainability. This charade continues as children are born without the resources they need, while wealthy families continue to fund misleading nonprofits that obscure the true sources of inequality. These organizations benefit the privileged children of funders while further harming marginalized communities.

Challenging assumptions that hurt our future infographic

    Shifting Power: Bottom-Up Empowerment

To create meaningful change and uphold children’s rights, we must implement parenting delay payments, structured inversely to wealth and income. Given the systemic inequities at play, the right to access wealth for these entitlements supersedes the rights of those who currently control wealth—particularly because their fortunes were amassed through unsustainable growth and the externalization of costs that violated children’s birthrights.

    A Systemic Analogy

Imagine that all social progress is being built on a crumbling foundation. Some individuals—those born into privilege—insist on continuing as usual, benefiting from their arbitrary birth advantage while others fall through the cracks, dragging many down with them. By refusing to rebuild this foundation, these free riders threaten the sustainability of our entire system. True freedom—true self-determination—requires that we ask fundamental questions about how we ensure that every new generation is empowered equitably, rather than subjected to inherited disparities that perpetuate environmental and social collapse.

  • Encouraging Wealthy Individuals to Support Care Groups for Family Planning and Reparations

Encouraging Wealthy Individuals to Support Care Groups for Family Planning and Reparations

Many organizations focus on reducing family size by promoting contraceptives, but they often overlook why parents make these choices. A better approach is encouraging people to join care groups, where they can learn about family planning benefits and see positive examples firsthand. These groups also provide essential resources like childcare, kitchen garden supplies, school fees, and materials—ensuring every child gets a fair start in life.

A New Way to Address Family Planning and Climate Change

Large organizations often rely on centralized systems to tackle family planning and climate issues, but these approaches don’t always work effectively. The Fair Start Movement (FSM) and Rejoice Africa Foundation Uganda (RAFUG) use a decentralized system, which leads to more transparent and impactful results for families directly affected by these issues.

A split infographic compares Current Family Planning with Fair Start Family Planning, listing differences in welfare, equality, and environmental protection for children, while highlighting how practices like legitimacywashing can undermine genuine progress.

How Can We Fund These Efforts?

Wealthy nations can adopt this community-driven approach and work with less wealthy countries to share resources, promote birth equity, and support smaller, more sustainable families.

    How Care Groups Work

Rejoice Africa Foundation has set up 20 care groups, each with 20 women led by a community leader. These leaders oversee projects like:

    • Kitchen gardens
    • Child savings programs
    • Family planning education
    • Agroforestry initiatives

Real Stories from Care Group Members

    Immaculate’s Leadership in Rwampara
Immaculate, a care group leader from Bugashe, Rwampara district, has helped women start kitchen gardens, practice sustainable cooking, and engage in family planning discussions. A donor contributed $640 for child savings accounts, enabling RAFUG to create 62 accounts and grants for kitchen gardens. However, financial support from wealthy individuals remains limited.

The Challenges of Family Planning: Ruth’s Story
Komugisha Ruth, a care group member, became pregnant while using the contraceptive Implanon. Struggling to provide for her child, Joan, she now questions parent-centered family planning and wants to delay having another child until she can better support her family.

Jemima’s Journey from Child Bride to Activist
Kabugho Jemima grew up in a poor family of 10 in Western Uganda. Forced into marriage at 16, she later worked as a maid for priests, one of whom sponsored her education in nursing. Now an activist, she fights for women’s rights, reproductive health, and climate-friendly farming. Jemima co-founded the Rejoice Africa Foundation, urging accountability through a reward-based system to combat climate change.

    The Impact of Care Groups

Sixty women across three care groups have successfully built kitchen gardens, growing their own vegetables—even on small plots or using sack farming. Some members now earn $10 per week selling their harvests. This financial independence has helped women like Paskazia, who once engaged in risky survival strategies but now supports her family through farming.

Joy, a mother of three, advises younger women to delay having children until they are better prepared. She shares her struggles during drought and poverty, encouraging others to plan for their children’s future.

Why Care Groups Matter for Reparations

The Care Group model is more than a support system—it’s a path to long-term change. It helps women:

    • Build Community: Women with shared experiences support one another.
    • Gain Education: They learn about reproductive health, nutrition, and financial planning.
    • Develop Skills: Training in income-generating activities promotes financial independence.
    • Advocate for Change: Women collectively push for justice and support.
    • Ensure Sustainability: Community-led initiatives create lasting impact.

A Call to Action for the Wealthy

If more wealthy individuals followed the example of Jessica Blome and invested in Care Groups as part of reparations, donations would be more transparent and accountable. Most importantly, future generations would have a fairer and more sustainable start in life.

  • The Case Against DBL

    The Case Against DBL

Many charities operate without accountability, and DBL has been identified as failing to meet essential standards. Its shortcomings are evident in three key areas:

    1. Prevention

DBL lacks a clear formula to prevent unborn children from facing the impacts of the climate crisis. Without integrating birth entitlements, its approach has led to increased mortality in vulnerable communities. This failure is exemplified by the tragic death of Mbabazi Judith, whose parents lacked the means to prevent her from dying of malaria—highlighting the consequences of symptom-focused, rather than root-cause-driven, charity.

    1. Protection

DBL’s approach to protecting communities from the climate crisis is top-down, rather than empowering families from the ground up. Many nonprofits repeat this mistake by neglecting decentralized family planning reforms, leaving the most affected populations without real solutions.

A split infographic compares Current Family Planning with Fair Start Family Planning, listing differences in welfare, equality, and environmental protection for children, while highlighting how practices like legitimacywashing can undermine genuine progress.

    1. Promotion

Because DBL fails in both prevention and protection, its promotion efforts are ineffective. Instead of advancing universal well-being, it focuses on providing basic needs like food, shelter, and education—without addressing birth equity, wealth redistribution, or reparations. DBL’s model does not meet UN or Fair Start standards, nor does it support true family planning reform.

The Cost of Inaction: Mbabazi Judith’s Story

Mbabazi Judith, a three-year-old from Rutoma village, Uganda, died from malaria and anemia because her family was too poor to afford timely treatment. Her mother, Kansiime Rovina, borrowed money and walked miles to seek care, but Judith passed away before reaching the hospital.

“Judith died because I was poor and did not have money.” – Kansiime Rovina

Challenging assumptions that hurt our future infographic

This tragedy is not an isolated case—it is the result of charitable models that fail to address systemic poverty and health inequalities.

    A Call for Reform

The Women Care Group model, used by the Rejoice Africa Foundation, is based on the 3P standard: Prevention, Protection, and Promotion. We urge DBL and similar organizations to adopt these principles and ensure their charity work addresses root causes rather than temporary relief. Without systemic change, preventable deaths like Judith’s will continue.
